Salted Peanuts (1 Viewer)

I don't think so. I don't know if it's possible to wash the salt off, but I wouldn't give salted peanuts to birds.
best wishes Rose.

Roasted unsalted peanuts are the best, whether in the shell or not. Rose and MaryE are correct in saying salt is a no-no for wild birds. Marine birds have evolved systems to deal with the salt content of water and their food; land birds haven't.

Also, be sure to always use roasted nuts, too, not raw. Any uncooked nuts can carry aflatoxins (from the presence of mildew) that are lethal to birds if ingested. :t:

ya know i just bought a bag of kaytee brand nut and berry mix from target, and as im reading the ingredients i noticed salt was listed. now how the heck can a well known critter company put this mix together with salt? have they no clue?
it looks very popular as i bought the last bag. so this has me worried, there must be thousands of people feeding this crap containing salt. but yet we dont see dead birds everywhere....kinda makes me wonder.
i will use this bag but i will not buy it again. luckily i got the small bag.
i feel like writing to the kaytee people :h?:

Well, the question is, how big a component is the salt? It might be so miniscule as to not be a problem. I don't know why they'd need to ADD salt, and as I buy this same brand of nut-n-berry mix, I'll check it out. Might be part of the preservative process for the dried fruits it contains? I'm just guessing here, but I'll definitely look into it. Thanks for pointing this out.

Salted seeds and nuts, however, have large amounts of the mineral and should definitely be avoided.

Add enough salt and you'll have ready preserved birds for the entire winter - no need to further feed then. Great money saving tip and isn't preserving as good as conserving? :)

Maybe stupid question:
Are the bird peanuts you buy in the shops roasted or raw?

I believe generally unroasted. Out here, the concept of 'bird' peanuts hasn't exactly caught on - never going to find such in shops, so all the umpteen tons I buy are 'human' peanuts and definately not roasted.

:bounce: Never have understood how those two words are used in the political arena. When I was growing up, preserves were something made from various fruits or berries that you spread on toast.

The peanuts I buy are for humans, from Wal-Mart, and come "roasted with salt," "raw," or "roasted without salt." These are in the shell. I haven't yet found a supplier where I live that sells roasted, shelled, unsalted peanuts but I'd sure like to. I suppose you could buy raw peanuts and roast them yourself, but here they're no cheaper than the already-roasted.
