Hi could any one tell me how this scope and eyepiece rate?
I see it has a 5 year warranty and stay on case.
Could I use an adapter and connect a D-SLR?

Any positive or negative comments appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Steve

IMHO, the RSPB AG80 is a horrible , plastic and cheap scope, with very average optics, And overpriced. (I'm now running for cover!) Much better inexpensive scopes can be found at www.opticron.co.uk, in particular the Mighty Midget 2 (50mm) the GS665 (non ED 66.5mm) or ES80 ED (80mm)
combined with an 'HDF' eyepiece they will all give excellent image quality.

For a 'Cheaper' and excellent low priced alternative have a look at the Celestron Ultima 80 (80mm and comes with 20-60 zoom) at Sherwoods (binocularhouse.com) for £139. good quality made by Synta.

Steve thanks but i had a Opticron MM and found the image dark and not very usable at the top end of the zoom range. I have the possibility of getting a almost new but used RSPB scope for £150.00 which is less than half price, at this price would it be a better buy? Problem is I won't use a scope often as I take the camera out, this is a boot of the car use when needed kinda purchase.

Hi Steve (original poster)

For the money and at the used price it isn't a bad scope. I don't think there is an adapter for a DSLR but it is front heavy so would balance well with a digital compact camera and adapter.

There was a kit sold with the scope for this though this is no longer available but there may be something in the future.

I had this to compare with the fixed eyepiece a nikon ed60 fixed eyepiece and opticron hr66ed and sdl zoom and it wasn't totally outclassed though even the fixed eyepiece was a bit narrow in field of view.

I don't know how the zoom rates but in any case the fixed eyepieces are cheap enough so I would say it is definately worth the money.

Hi Steve,

If its only going to cost you £150, then that's ok, does it come with an eyepiece?. Yes the Opticron MM2 being only 52mm objective will be dark
at high mag. It is very good when used with HDF 18x and gives very good
digiscoped images at this mag. would'nt use it much higher though. Again the Opticron Gs665 (non ed) is excellent up to HDF 25x, but above starts to loose it. If the AG80 comes with an eyepiece at this price then go for it.

Regards
Steve

Don't forget the Celestron ultima 80 (comes with 20-60x zoom) for £139
you could always return it if it was not what you wanted. You have 7 days
to return under the Distance selling regulations and need give no reason.
