Royal Aproval Ross 9x35 (1 Viewer)

Many people I am sure enjoy the detailed discussion on the "Alpha" threads as to which binocular is best. I enjoy the porro vs roof debates and currently how the new Zeiss HTs will compare to the competition.
Much as I enjoy this discussion I am often left wondering how on earth I can continue to use or be seen in public with my classic Zeiss's. My oldest, a pair of Zeiss 10x40 T*are still covered for another 3 years of their 30 year warranty.
Imagine therefore my delight today in seeing a photo on the front page of "The Times" (London) of Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall with a pair of Ross Septruva 9x35s. Admittedly she was at the races (Cheltenham) but nevertheless an inspiration to those of us, desparately needing a reason not to spend £2000 on new binoculars!

No surprise really, I have an old well used Ross Stepruva, yet it still feels like a true thoroughbred every time that I pick it up.

Robert:

Good to hear the report on the Ross. I do suppose the Duchess has never used a binocular
much, if at all. So, she would be happy viewing with almost anything.

Its all about show, you know.

Eh? She's spent half her life looking through binoculars during her now husband's public engagements.
Here's link to photos shown in The Telegraph newspaper :

To my knowledge no newspaper here has yet argued that by using a binocular presented as a gift by Anne Boleyn to Henry VIII the Duchess has been disrespectful to the memory of our former monarch.

I suspect you may be wrong about usage, the Royal Family are pretty keen (fanatical?)on horse racing and a pair of binoculars usually in their cases between races is normal for the "better off" spectator.
I should admit to never having been to the races but have seen horse racing on TV.
When I started birdwatching in the UK in the early seventies, the binocular companies targetted the race goer possibly more than the birdwatcher in their marketing/advertising strategy. I suspect the relatively recent discontinued Leica with the leather case was aimed at the race goer.
In fairness the Ross bins are probably more than adequate for purpose as "flossiepip" indicates above.

Interesting as earlier I posted a note about my Ross 12x50 Stepray seeing quite a bit of duty when I haven't the time nor field for a mounted 25-40x.

Lightweight, quick to bear & plenty of magnification for fast &/or high fliers.
