Rock dove or feral pigeon? (S. France) (1 Viewer)

This bird looks to me like a rock dove - but it could be a feral pigeon or an escaped domesticated one. Is there any way to tell them apart? Or is it something else entirely? The picture was taken in our country garden; although we have wood pigeons aplenty, in over three years here this is the first time we have had a pigeon like this.

Rock doves and feral pigeons are the same species. Rock doves being wild and feral pigeons being escaped domesticated pigeons. This is a fairly young (less than 6-7 months old) bird. Wild Rock doves (not mixed with feral birds) are extremely rare and according to some experts only restricted now to some Mediterranean islands.

Most things look good for Rock Dove to me bar the eye colour which I would expect to be browny/orange, or is this why MichavdB has it as a 1st year bird?
Looking again, the mantle perhaps looks a shade too dark and the ceres/nostril area is a bit discoloured.

Hi,
it looks like a Rock Dove for me, with the small bill, it's a juvenile one.
But the question is, if we have still pure wild Rock Dove's somewhere!
I'm living in UAE on a big mountain, where hundred's of RD are. When I saw them first time I was very happy to see tham in the wild, they looks really different from the Feral Pigeon's which I know, but everywhere you can see spotted Dove's between!
Cheers
Peter.
