Robin Nesting Behavior (1 Viewer)

A robin has been nesting for the last few years in a bush near my deck. I had noticed the robin hadn't been around in the last couple days, so I peeked in to see the nest and noticed some odd things: there were actually two nests built almost on top of each other, one was empty and the other had one egg. I think I saw a chipmunk attack the nests a few days ago, he jumped in and the mother robin was flying around going crazy. But I'm not sure chipmunks even eat eggs. Do chipmunks kill Robin eggs? And, in the event some of her eggs were destroyed, would a Robin abandon the final egg?

Hi RamBird and a warm welcome to you from those of us on staff here at BirdForum.

To answer your question. Yes, the Robin will probably have abandoned the nest and yes, I can remember when I was a kid back in NY watching the Chipmunks raid nests and eat the contents of eggs. There are many critters out there, including birds that will eat the eggs of another bird. It's a cruel and sad part of nature but nature nonetheless.

Thanks KCFoggin. It's sad but hopefully she's more successful next year. Also, on a separate note, does anyone know of bird feeder brands that are actually squirrel resistant? Mine are getting attacked by squirrels who scare off the birds.

If you do a google search using "squirrel resistant bird feeders" it should bring up a lot of different feeders for you ;)
