Ringed Goldfinch found (1 Viewer)

A student of mine found a dead goldfinch at Tomhaggard, Co. Wexford, Ireland, with a metal ring with the following inscription:
"Brit Museum London SW7
V342477"

Forgive my ignorance, but presumably I report this to the British Museum? Many thanks.

Postscript....sorry, just found the BTO ringing report form by Googling.

Obviously using the BTO ringing report form is ideal. However, reporting the ring to the British Museum is also fine - and that address (perhaps plus "UK") is good enough.

Thank you for doing this - every ring reported is valuable. Apparently ring finds are away down in terms of percentage of rings used on what they were c.40 years ago.

Mike.

Thanks Mike, the entire class of 12-year olds awaits with bated breath news of the bird (the BTO kindly responded and said they'd be in touch with details later). I hope the Goldfinch originated somewhere terribly exotic, like England, Wales or Scotland, 'cos if he's from two km down the road, it'll be a bit of a let-down!;)

Hi Sancho

It would be rude to keep a whole bunch of 12 yaer olds waiting, so we can maybe give you some quick details now... This bird was ringed as an adult male on 7 February 2007 near Ballincollig, Co. Cork, which by my reckoning is 148km from you! Goldfinches do move around a bit in the winter (they are a classic partial migrant), but this is still quite a nice movement.

We'll still send you full details in due course, but this will keep the kids happy in the meantime. For some more info, have a look at some of the leaflets here:

Might I suggest lying to the class ;)

LOL, Jos! No need....to the kids here in Bray, "Cork" is another planet, much further away than the UK....halfway to Cuba, in fact! (Corkonians will understand, no offence intended, I love Cork....)

Sincerest thanks for the news, Mark!!!
