Ricoh GX200 vs Nikon P6000 (1 Viewer)

Ricoh GX200 has been getting some reasonable reviews for digiscoping. Wondering how it would compare with Nikon P6000 especially for more distant shots. Anyone had any experience with this camera/comparison with P6000 please?

Finno,
It has the same lens as the GX100 so have a look at that thread . The lens needs to be used at almost full zoom to eliminate vignetting with most eyepieces, especially zooms. I can't find a review on it yet but I'm sure it's a good camera in it's own right.
Neil.

Thanks but while he mentions the GX200, he actually only reviews the GX100. I have also seen many Japanese reviews of the GX100 as well as Neil's review. When I was looking for a new camera a few months ago, I played with the GX200 in the store and thought it fell short as a good choice for many reasons, least of which was the short 72mm lens.

On the otherhand, I really liked the CX1 but its 200mm lens is too long for most eyepieces. However, I have a Kowa VA3 adapter with 60mm of eyerelief and sliding adapter so it would work for me, BUT the VA3 is only 14x eyepiece so I would be limited to only 2800mm focal length. I want/need much more.

cheers,
Rick

...I have tried GX100 same lens with SWA 80HD ATS +30XSW ..these are some samples....the problems are ...the focus too slow ..and when you used the usb shutter release cord there is some time lag...

Great shots mohbhorn, I have also sent you a private message for some technical info.

Cheers

Finno

Hi Finno,
I reply your private message if it could help you but I could not attach images for you so I attach them here. you'll notice the zoom bar on the left.Though you'll see darkening at the edge of the second image it's just 20% dark you'll still get pictures without vignette.
Regards,
mohbhorn.

Finno,
I had the GX100 (same lens as the GX200 ) out in the park yesterday so did some comparison shots with the P6000. Here is the composite comparison. The bottom crop is from the Ricoh image top right.
The P6000 is a tad sharper but the GX200 will have closed the gap. The GX100 is faster. They both have raw. The P6000 lens is almost twice as long so reach is much better as can be used a full zoom in good light.

Thanks Neil

I have taken a bit of a punt and purchased the GX200 because it is a bit faster than the P6000. Will take some test shots when it arrives and post them.

have you got your camera yet? I've just been offered an GX200 at a good price so would be interested to see what kind of results you're getting.

In the Menu for the GX100 , under FOCUS, they have a feature called SNAP. This locks the AF on much faster than the Spot AF. I'm not sure what the difference is but it could be worth exploring.
Also it's always faster, and more accurate , to focus on a non moving object eg branch/rock/legs/ground. For waders moving I usually focus on the ground in front of the bird and let them walk into focus.
It is very difficult with these digicams at high magnifications to freeze action on moving subjects. With plovers feeding for instance , I follow them until they stop, and then take the shot.
I'm looking forward to seeing some images from the GX200.

These are great examples of what the GX100 is capable of. I have the USB cable somewhere but I found the same problem with delay. As the GX100 frame rate is fast I set CONTINUOUS and blast away. If you use the Electronic Viewfinder (nice outside in bright light ) the pressure of your eye to the viewfinder adds a bit of steadyness to the whole rig.
Neil

ps I just looked up SNAP AF and found it locks focus to a close 2.8 meters. It needs to be tested how this works with digiscoping.
