Resplendent Quetzal Mexico (1 Viewer)

Hello birders, I am seeking information on most accessible sites for Resplendent Quetzal in Mexico and also general birding sites for Yucatan Peninsula. Any information welcomed.

I have not seen Respledent Quetzal in Mexico, but you will find plenty of info in Steve Howell's excellent 'Where to watch birds in Mexico'. I used it when I travelled around the Yucatan a few years ago and it was really informative and well researched. His field guide is also the best for the region.

Thanks Tom. I will check out your sign and purchase Steve Howell's book.

Well, Edwards in about 1986 said they could be found at the Lagunas de Montebello in Chiapas state southeast of Comitan. Other areas are around Maspastepec (spelling unknown) in Oaxaca state. This area would probably be almost impossible to find. Private property and no maps. The most likely area is probably around El Triunfo near the Pacific coast of Chiapas. Most likely because there are some birding tours that go there.

Me personally, I'm going to Costa Rica.

The other advantage of El Triunfo is that there are many other top quality birds such as the Horned Guan. I've still not been there myself (all the species are also found nearer to me in Guatemala), but its supposed to be an excellent site.

Grahame,
I'll second tom's recommendation of the Bird Finding Guide and also suggest 'A Guide to the Birds of Mexico and Northern Central America' (Steve Howell & Sophie Webb) (only shortcoming of this book is that it lacks shore birds so you need something else if you want them, otherwise it is heads above the rest).

For some of my trip reports on birding in Mexico, use the search feature on Birdforum and search for posts started by Dave B Smith and the word Mexico in the title and you'll find about 10 reports that may be useful.

If you are specifically interested in the Quetzal, I'd follow curunir to Costa Rica and head to Monte Verde. In Mexico, El Triunfo is probably the best site for this bird, but that is a hike and camping, and probably a guide required.

Good luck and please let us know what you find. It is great birding!

It also lacks illustrations of the vast majority of migrants. People going to Mexico probably should think about bringing a North American guide too (e.g. Sibleys or the National Geographic guide).

Ditto on Howell's books combined with one for NA migrants should you feel you need it.

Before running off to Costa Rica, check out these photos of the Quetzals from the south to the north of their range....

IMO, a Resplendent Quetzal should be as resplendent as possible!
