Red Kite Observation (1 Viewer)

This was taken over the North Staffordshire countryside. Firstly, I've never noticed Red Kite in Staffordshire before. Secondly, I really can't understand what is going on with the missing primary feathers. The symmetry of the gaps makes me suspect they might have been removed deliberately?? Also, the tail feathers looked very ragged and torn. I really hope it's just something that can occur naturally (caught on brambles, or perhaps a tear up with a rival, or even an element of self neglect due to being fully committed with feeding young chicks around the clock) It would be good to know what's going on....Good to hear some thoughts if anyone's seen this kind of thing before?

Edit...shown the pic to a chap at my local RSPB site today and he thinks it's just malting?

Normal wing moult
Yes. Of course if they didn't lose them symmetrically, they would find it extremely difficult to fly properly; they'd probably only be able to go round in circles LOL.
