I am real lucky, I have 2 male Red-bellied Woodpecker fighting over a freshly excavated hole in the top of a snag. The first male Red-bellied Woodpecker started excavation near the bottom of the snag but was constantly challenged by the second competing woodpecker. The first male Red-bellied Woodpecker has completed a nest hole excavation in the very top of the same tree, but they are still fighting. The second competing Red-bellied Woodpecker craws up the tree and pecks fiercly at the other Red-bellied woodpecker. I mean they are fighting rough. I am keeping an eye on them. I have been feeding them woodpecker seed cakes all winter long in a specialty tail prop suet cake feeder.
Maybe someone else has experiences with woodpeckers?
I may attach some pictures to this posting. If I do, please understand they are not of the best quality, but they do give you a general idea. I like to have pictures even if they are not the best quality just so that people can get a better visual on what I am talking about.
