Ramsey Eating Puffins (1 Viewer)

Lichfield Birder

...should've been here 5 minutes ago, mate....
Gordon Ramsey is currently eating puffins on the TV, in Iceland. What an arse. Why should this be happening and shown on TV. He is being trained on how to catch them with a net. With the current population decline of these birds (in UK at least) it does not set a good example. They may be abundant in Iceland currently but this does not last forever - Great Auk ring any bells.

Why does he have to do this. Publicity and money of course. Apparently they taste rich and whatever other bollox is coming out of his mouth tonight.

I remember Keith Floyd doing exactly the same thing many years ago. I guess the thing to remember is that in certain countries this is perfectly acceptable.
But yes he's still an arse.

Ramsey? Is he the foul-mouthed idiot chef on British TV who used to play football? I suppose a second career abusing folk on national TV has a time-limit, and he has to do something else mildly offensive. Hope he enjoys his puffin. Actually, I hope it makes him retch, never could stand the moron. Celebrity chef mi culo.

Yes, I followed the whole thing about Gordon Ramsey eating Puffins very distasteful tonight.
All to do with island custom.
One man who is an expert at catching Puffins, and eating their raw uncooked hearts like they where sweeties was disguisting. 'Go on the local expert pushes Gordon once more to try it and taste the good island life'. I changed channels so fast. I feel green thinking about it now. :-C :eek!:

At least it only covered the last part or so of the program. We where also given a warning about it in the last part of the program.

It was odd that Gordon was kissing the Puffins one minute then he was breaking their necks to eat them the next minute

Poor birds have enough on their plates like eating, breeding and living to survive day to day without being exploited for 'sensational' TV.

:-C

I don't get to watch BBC so what wine does he recommend with them? I'm always torn between a Burgundy and a fruity Shiraz.

Four Puffins ain't no big loss. Reserve your foul language for the people and governments who allow the overfishing of their staple diet.

John.

However it's hardly a good advertisement for conservation in action. Or respect for nature.

Bring back the Moas I say . . . .

I would have tried the pickled black guillimot starter with the minke whale main because I was curious on a recent Iceland trip. It would have cost 65 quid so I went for a burger instead. Sorry guys I don't condone any of it but things are just done differant up there. I like ramsey but he is a tv chef who likes a shock factor. Don't get wound up by it. The harvesting of seabirds is still done under licence in the UK.

According to what I just read in the Belgian newspaper " Gazette van Antwerpen " poor Gordon fell off a cliff and almost drowned; he surfaced after 45 seconds and his team was able to pull him out, more dead than alive. In hospital he was treated for injuries on his leg and his nose. His legwound came from the rocks, his nosewound from an angry Puffin.
Poor Gordon almost snuffed it!
That would have been a loss for television, and gourmet kitchen!

His last thoughts when he went under were " F*** it!! "
Just like we know him.

I hope Ramsey stays away from Skomer island. What's on next weeks show - Poached West Country cattle egret with posh chips?

I have to agree with John here. Four puffins wont keep a nest of bonxies going for long. Puffins problems are huge and complexed vent your anger at the causes, cos vented at the publicity and noteriety seeking celeb and it will only fuel their monotonus momentum. Please put your energy to better use than that.....Then one day if your lucky enough to meet Mr Ramsy just stick one on him and tell him that was for the puffins......job done!

Living in Japan and only watching a handful of UK shows which I choose to download I'm mercifully spared the likes of Gordon Ramsay.

Hopefully there's a parallel universe somewhere with sentient foul mouthed talking seabirds barbecuing Gordon Ramsays.

Can't really see the big deal about eating Puffin though. They aren't endangered in Iceland and it's just 'game' meat surely? Those hardy strapping island folk need their protein after all.

Doesn't it taste a bit fishy anyway? That'd be my main problem.

Ramsey = Clarkson. There is a small breed of TV personalities that thrive on controversy so that people like us comment on their bad behaviour. I caught a few minutes of the F-word with Graham Norton (yet another one but also read: Julian Clary) last night. Ramsey and Norton were laughing at the latter's account of pissing in filter coffee. Not a good example but it gets the switchboard going so that they know how many people watch.

I watched the show with interest last night. Yes Gordon Ramesey is a bit of a gobshite...but the guy can cook. Ive tried some of his recipes and they are pretty damn good!

5 million puffins breeding in the area he visited. They are hunted under licence in a particular season according to traditional methods for a very low population of people eating them. I have no problems with this.

He even said it himself...a number of people will be offended by this because we think puffins are lovely and cute and the kids have the stuffed toy version and bill oddie looks at them on TV every springwatch etc etc etc etc. But the fact of the matter is this is a quite well controlled natural harvesting which, as many people have said, will have no affect on the population...especially in comparison with the effect over fishing will have on this and other seabird species.

How many of you out there have had a cod and chips supper at any point in the last few years?

Endangered species there on every menu, in every town, in every country.
Frozen in every supermarket. Captain birdseye "Ye found my gold aarrrr, Tuck in".
And no one blinks an eye.

The conditions of animals in batterys and intensive farming that has been highlighted again and again....but I doubt too many of us are out there buying our free range chickens or traditionally raised pork/beef etc etc.

But the cute little puffins....oh yeah. What a disgrace.

Its been said time and again.
Fishing as we know it is not sustainable.
We all hate the thought of unemployed and impoversihed fishing communities around our coasts....but the time to make the hard decisions in regards to fish stocks came and went long ago.

Chances are the only way we will see any recovery is if we have a major ban on fishing lasting years.

As GR would say, Bo..ocks!;) In France he, and all the other crap celebrity chefs on British and Irish TV, would be third-rate and looking for work in a restaurant. In fact, in Mrs. Sancho would cook him into a cocked hat. I don't care what he eats on TV to shock us (and I agree with earlier posters, we eat lots of stuff, puffins have no particular claim to protection other than their cuteness, and I've eaten puppy and turtle). He's just a pillock. Woo-hoo! What a cathartic rant! I feel better already.

well he's got more michelin stars than any of the snooty nationalist-chauvinists who'd be turning him down so i don't imagine he'd be too bothered......

apart from that, pretty much agree with pariah (he's obviously not all bad ;))

Truly, spot on, Sancho - couldn't agree more. The man is arbitrarily contentious, vulgar beyond description and has the social finesse of a wolverine.

Apologies actually, I rather like wolverines.
