Back in late 90’s I bought my wife pocket Nikons. She rarely used them so I’ve taken them over. My other glases are Swarovski EL 10x32, and old Swarovski SLC 8x30. The SLC I bought around 1989.

But I’ve been using the little Nikons lately and realize how much I’ve under appreciated them optically and mechanically.

Question - were there different models of the 8x20’s back then. Printing on back of hinge assembly reads “8x20 6.8 L Waterproof “. I long ago lost the box, but I seem to recall it being printed with ‘Premier’ on it but not positive.

Now days I see Nikon 8x20 with the model HGL. So, what do I have compared to the latest models?

I believe you have the Nikon 8x20 LXL. It was and remains the top pocket binocular model
that Nikon has ever made. Later examples may have been called Premier, and there may have
been some coatings changes along the way. They compare well with the best pockets out
there.
Enjoy the binocular, and look for some other recent threads and posts about these.

Hi John,

A review of the HGL version, with reference to the earlier HG version, can be found on Roger Vine's site: Nikon 8x20 HG L Review

Nikon used different designations for the same product lines, in different sales regions. Designations such as Premier, HG (High Grade), HGL (Luxury) and LXL all indicated the top of the range offerings.
