Hi All,

I've heard that there have usually been a couple of pairs of Puffins that breed down nr Swanage on Purbeck - a place called Dancing Ledge has been mentioned.

Does anyone know whether they are there this year?? Plus any info regarding exact location etc would be much appreciated...I'm going to be down that neck of the woods later on this week and might go and have a look..

Thanks.... Ruby

Did you ever see puffins there? I notice in the 1988-1991 breeding bird atlas that there were 1-26 puffins in the area, but that was a long, long time ago!

I used to go to school called Spyway about a mile from Dancing Ledge in Langton Matravers in the early to mid 70's and we used to go and swim in the natural pool there and I remember puffins there but revisited a couple of years ago and didnt see any.

No. I did go down there in early Summer 2005 but I didn't see any.

I also went to Portland on another ocassion, but it didn't turn out to be a very suitable day, with quite high seas and a strong wind throwing spray all over the shore.

I did see many Auks, but didn't manage to pick up on any Puffins.

I think what is needed is a nice calm sunny day - probably around late June/early July.... main problem for me is that Portland is about 4 hrs drive (minimum) and I didn't manage to get there this summer.

One day, I hope.....

We have a small population of puffins here on the Isle of Man, with the biggest colony on Peel Hill, 1-2km from my home here in Peel. As you say, the best conditions in which to see the puffins is when it is calm. Peak numbers are in June and July. I once saw 53 in the 1970s, but much fewer now.
