Been today to pass the time, but forgot any bins :( Dint see much tbh Chaffinch Rook Wren Heron etc but still nice day.
Anyone seen any good stuff there? There was a series of photos of a Heron that had killed a little grebe but couldnt swallow it!
And does anyone know of any other good places to go to S. Yorkshire area?
Thanks x

Hi Dave
Have a browse through this thread and you should get some idea about the county. You could also have a look in Opus for more ideas.
I go to Potteric pretty regularly and have seen bittern, lesser 'pecker, caspian gull at the site. There is also the RSPB reserve at Old Moor which isn't very far from Potteric, this reserve does get more waders than Potteric as there is more mud.

Thanks Keith your a star.

There's also Blacktoft RSPB, which although it isn't in South Yorkshire isn't very far from Potteric (maybe 40 minutes drive?), and is excellent both for waders at passage times, and also for the classic reedbed species, including Marsh Harrier, Bittern, Reed and Sedge warblers and Bearded Tit.

A site that is constantly improving in most ways is North Cave YWT. Although it's some distance from Potteric, it's motorway paractically door-to-door, so not more than 40 minutes drive. In the recent years, I've viewed, Temminck's Stint, passage Little Gull, and Black necked Grebe there.

Don't forget, either, that the minor roads crossing the moors (and indeed the major A628 at dawn) can be very good for Red Grouse; try the minor roads round Midhopestones and Langsett. (A word of warning; AFAIK the former 'raptor viewpoint' near here no longer produces any sightings, due to persecution)

sometimes a walk round lakeside near potteric carr can be productive, in the last few weeks theres been little gulls and artic terns seen, aswell as black necked grebe.

How regularly are the black-necked grebes being seen there this summer, do you know? Is it worth going on spec' ?

they are seen a few times a week on lakeside, the best bet would be to go to potteric carr because they have been seen daily recently. I would think the grebes on lakeside are the one from potteric.

What part of Doncaster are you in DB? I am from Doncaster and we have many places locally where we see good birds.

I'm from Cantley, yourself? Yeh we have got decent birding places nearby haven't we, i think alot of places are underwatched though. The only disadvantage i have alot of the time is, it has to be pushchair friendly which limits my options on where i can go.

Potteric Carr has been most productive for me with regards to sightings of Water Rail. Our birding group have been twice since I've been joining the trips, and on both, the WR seemed almost on rails by the feeding station at the cafe, as it circled out of the reeds and back in again, before appearing about ten minutes later.

Old Moor, the new(ish) hide area, the screen just before it gave great views (and shots) of the WR swimming - though the second one remained elusive!

Tickhill originally but now Bircotes. Do you use Broomhill Flash? We have had some really good birds there over the years. Also Lound Gravel Pits is always worth a look. Do you have any bogey birds in our area? I might be able to suggest places.
