Pineapples as food (1 Viewer)

Went down my local greengrocer the other day for some out of date fruit (apples etc) for the Thrushes at my feeding station.He also gave me some Pineapples that were on the way out.Would they eat these or is it a big no no?Thanks,Mike.

Maybe people are unsure, and don't want to give dodgy advice that could give you a garden full of sick birds.

I will say that I've seen fruit mixtures sold for Birds that contained pineapple.

If you can't find a definitive answer by searching online, you might try phoning your local Vet. I have phoned and received free advice on a number of occasions.

At a guess . . . should be ok I'd think...

I thought the idea of lots of fruit is that it's a tasty snack for birds/mammals and will end up in them spreading their seeds about. Since it's very sweet and not bitter it's unlikely to contain any harmful alkaloids (well we can eat it, and we're fairly fussy as a species). Guess you'd have to be careful if it was going over too much though - you don't want all your thrushes to end up drunk!!

If they like it they'll probably eat it. . .

I would think it'd be OK but I wouldn't have thought much would go for it. I tried doing the same as you in the past but a) I don't have a local greengrocer and b) the local supermarkets wouldn't sell/give me any out of date fruit for fear of getting sued. Does anybody know where I can get hold of some relaible supplies of apples? I need to put out quite a lot at a time if I bother at all since the hordes of local Jackdaws will probably take most of them.
