Pick Pentax Papilio or spend 5x and pick Maven ? (1 Viewer)

The Papilo is great for close viewing butterflies, flowers etc. It isn't waterproof though. I have the Maven B series 6x30 and like it very much. Very sharp views and wide fov. For a 9 yo it would be especially useful. Taking both would work very well.

The Kowa 6.5x has a very wide fov, but softens at the edges. Some people tolerate that more then others. It does have very good close focus, so it could serve both purposes.

Thanks for all the advices here, good learning.
I am comparing 8x30 vs 6x30. Weight, size and prize (almost) is same. Then why someone shouldn't take longer range of 8x, vs 6x ? It gives more reach.
As far I understood, two big reasons -
  • 6x will give slightly bigger FoV, so more scene area in the view.
  • exit pupil is bigger in 6x. So it is easier to place eye on that small hole and chase subject.

Is my understanding correct here ?

Pretty much yes.

I currently own a Papillio 6.5x21 that I completely adore, but I use it to enjoy insects and flowers, for that purpose they are perfect.
I also used to own a Maven 6x30, they are incredible, they have dialectric coated prisms and ED glass and very relaxed view. They had a very smooth focusing mechanism and they are very well built. IF you could spend a little bit more you should try the Swarovski Curio 7x21, they are amazing, they are worth every cent.

I can extend some of my budget, but I searched for Swarovski Curio 7x21 and it would be almost $1000 including taxes, though looks nice and not heavy too. Couldn't find anything in sale too, on this forum. If you are suggested Swarovski, then Swarovski My Junior is in similar range. Will read about it, in comparison to Maven/Monarch.
Any opinion on this comparison ?
Edit - I got this one comparison tool (just to get a rough idea) -

If a child is using it a 6x will be easier for them to hold steady and avoid the shakes. Also it has better eye relief, if that is an issue for you.

The place I ordered mine from was priced at about $750 when I checked a couple days ago. It's still the only binocular I've yet to buy brand new, from a dealer, and I would have ordered it sooner if I'd known how great it would turn out to be.

Is it still at same price ? Where did you order it from ?
Probably thanksgiving can show some discount in less than a month if they do

I think everyone should have a Papillio in their collection of optical tools . They are even better mounted , makes their macro abilities shine . It's the 6.5x21 Version #1 in the picture . I now have the 8.5x21 version #2 .
