Phone, MP3, iPod - ignoramus needs help! (1 Viewer)

Having never progressed beyond the CD, I was looking at maybe getting an iPod for music and bird songs, but as the back has just fallen off my mobile telephone (it's on a £8.95pm contract with more free calls and texts than I'd ever use, so no chance of an upgrade) I wondered if there's a better product to suit my needs.

I'd like to be able to download bird calls from (for eg) Xeno-canto; I would also like to be able to transfer some music from my CD collection. I have no idea if this is possible, or if different products have compatibility issues, or if special software is needed to convert data.......my level of ignorance is probably unmatched!

If a 'phone will do the above, given that iPods seem to be about £160ish, it seems sensible to get a decent telephone instead of having two gizmos to carry around. I don't need the 'phone to do anything fancy telephony-wise, I doubt I'd use internet connection for instance, I'd rather transfer files from a computer with a cable.

If anyone has suggestions, I'm all ears!

I would have thought a phone is the way to go. I have hundreds of bird songs on my iPhone5.

You may remember my phone from our Morocco trip? - Downloaded my bird cds onto it, plus some from xeno-canto, plus takes fairly good photos. Not a modern iphone though, which may be a better bet to cover all the bases - except you run into battery life issues with them I believe (eg 1 day instead of 5 days life in normal usage)

(Probably not the best particular model for listening to music though - others in the series were better for that. Plus other makes etc etc ... )

Any reasonable mobile phone that has been around for a couple of years will do what you want. They all have good music players which is what you need for the xeno-canto files, and your CD collection. If this is all you need, along with making voice calls and texts then there is no point in you spending mega bucks getting the latest all singing - all dancing smartphone as it will despise you. Look around for poeple who have upgraded their Wildfire (android) or Iphone 3

It is a phone all the way. Decide how much you want to spend and then go to a local phone show and talk to the nice folks.

Brilliant - saved me making an expensive mistake (I'd looked at the latest smartphones - £500-odd!! - and almost made my mind up that it would have to be an ipod).

Dan, yes I do remember your 'phone now you mention it, still got the downloaded pics on my laptop. Your link was useful; I also had a look at the bit at the bottom "people who bought this item also bought...." - mostly 'phone related gismos, but I had to laugh at the cat flea tablets

Sony xperia go is waterproof. I got one, its fine and has a decent battery life., the screen is pretty small though. You can just about input comfortably to birdtrack with it. Its due to get the latest version of android. £176 sim free on Amazon.

I bought my ipod 2nd hand off a well known auction site(£105.00)then downloaded The bird songs of europe(chirp)which cost me 99p.I believe the same app will work on android phones as well.
