Pelicans Eat Gannets (1 Viewer)

That is very enterprising of the Pelicans, I think. Though extremely dreadful for the Gannet chicks. Other birds do it too, eat the chicks of other species.

At risk of being labelled a 'sceptic' I'm not convinced that 'poor fish stocks' is the only reason for this behaviour. I bet that even if there were zillions of fish, those opportunistic Pelicans would still grab a gannet lunch, purely because it's a pretty easy meal.

I have to go along with Val & Cm8.It only takes one to show how it can be done and everyone gets in on the act. e.g. Tits used to get the fat from the old doorstep milk bottles and chimps learn to crack nuts using tools.Lots of birds eat smaller birds and so it goes on ad infinitum. These comments in no way belittle the video which educates us about survival.

On 'Life' David said the Pelican population is increasing rapidly, I'm not surprised if they eat a Gannet chick or two a day. I guess outside the breeding season, they must go back to eating fish.

I have just remembered this news article from a couple of years ago ...

Pelican eats pigeon in park

An RSPB spokesman said: "It is almost unheard of for a pelican to eat a bird. Their diet should be strictly fish."

Wonder if that spokesman saw the Life programme?

Well, I had never even heard of that poem. At first I was thinking 'gawd, you are all quick of the mark' then I twigged it was a 'real poem' not a made up one! :-O
