I read somewhere that peanuts should only be left in the feeder for a specific time and then discarded. I cannot recall where I read this or what the time period was but I would be grateful if anyone could advise.
I haven't heard anything serious that can go wrong with peanuts, especially if they are being eaten fast enough so that they are not in the feeder for more than a week (which is usually the case, given how popular peanuts are with most birds).
I did find this bit of info from BirdWatchersDigest.com, though: "Check them often for signs of black mold or the darkening in color that can mean they've gone rancid."
Generally mold requires moist/humid conditions to take hold, so I think as long as the peanuts are protected from getting wet there should be nothing really to worry about.

Peanut and other seed mould contains Alfatoxin which is poisionous to birds, also reputed to be a carcinogen linked to liver and stomach cancers if eaten by humans.. :gn: in general only fill the feeders to meet the rate of consumption by birds coming to feed and clean them on a regular basis...oh and don't eat them....stick to a few pints of the black stuff instead B

I guess it depends on time of year and temperature. I offer shelled nuts, and probably once every month I dump out the bottom contents (the old stuff).
