Hi Shaun,
I,ve been to Paul strays a few times and I liked it but the last time I went which would be about 18 months ago I was disgusted with the state of it there was the remains of a burnt out car on the car park which I must add looked has if it had been there quite some time and the notices had all been pulled up and thrown in the water also there was dog mess all over the paths
so Ihave,nt been since. I might add when I got home I gave the office a ring
and the reply I got was that an agency was responcible for the upkeep and if I gave them my phone number they would get back to me and I,m still waiting. But I must visit again in the near .
Regards,
Stan.

Only been up that way once and visited your patch so there is someone with a 100% attendance record. Does that cheer you up? ;)

Looked a good spot for that rare wader from the east.

Bit miffed to know now there are Tree Sparrers there. Not keeping a UK year list but would have been nice to have filled that box in! ;)

I've visited the Paull several times on my way back home from North Cave Wetlands or Blacktoft Sands and always found it a great reserve, especially for waders. Not seen anything that unusual yet, although I havn't spent a great deal of time there (usually rushing to get home for my dinner).

Unfortunately Paulls close proximity to Hull (one of the highest car crime rates in the country) means that yobs can potentially destroy any hides or signs that are put in place, or dump stolen cars. Obviously, these problems are not unique to Hull, these are problems that face most reserves close to urban areas.
I will certainly be visiting PHS again in the future.

Well I am a little bit happier now I know other people have visited my local patch.

But I also know what you all mean by the past vandalism problems. Touch wood it seems to be a past problem (possibly because they cant find anything more to destroy) but happily the birds keep returning.

Hopefully if any of you revisit it will be a more memorable time for the right reasons.

Paull Holme Strays is just outside of Paull village off the road that links Paull to Thorngumbald which funnily enough is named Thorngumbald road.

It is really well sign posted (brown 'reserve' signposts) and should be easy to find if you head towards Paull from Hull going past the big BP site and through the middle of Paull village.

Dont know how familiar you are with the area but hope this helps.
Good Luck

Hi Shaun,
I have just seen your post regarding Paull Nature Reserve. I only discovered the reserve a couple of months ago but as live in East Hull and am retired I visit quite often. I have only seen one Little Egret but it has been there nearly every time I go. I have also seen a Merlin on one or two occasions. The hide had just been completed when I first went and I thoroughly enjoyed the visit. It is a little off putting to see the motorcycle tyre marks in the mud and I can't help thinking it is only a matter of time before these youth work their way round to the hide.
still a very good site.

Know what you mean about the tyre marks Brian-see quite a few bikes flying round the reserve regular. Hopefully they will get bored before causing any serious damage.

Had a quick visit down to the hide last weekend. Got a great view of an egret as it flew towards and over the top of the hide. Also saw a male pintail fly over towards the river and a massive flock of plovers over the main flats near car park- must have been over 1000 birds.

Full list for the day was:

Greylag Geese 50+
Wigeon 9
Teal 3
Pintail 1
Shelduck 6
Avocet 1
Grey and golden plover c1000
Great black backed gull 2
Redshank 15+
Little egret 2
Lapwing 25+
Black headed gull 20+
Common gull 20+
Pied wagtail 1

I went to Paull nature reserve for a couple of hours this morning, the light was bad and the tide was well out so didn't see a great lot, might have seen more if the light had been better. I did see a hare legging it across the mud to get to the Humber bank. I walked to the hide, I was going to have a sit for a while but it was locked. It doesn't seem a bad idea to lock it but how long have they been locking it and how does one get the key.

Just a quick update after i had a short cold morning walk around the reserve yesterday.

The usual high numbers of shelduck, teal, curlew and redshank were present along with good numbers of skylark.
I was also pleased to see a pair of little grebe and the brilliant blue flash of a kingfisher whizzing by on the last pool near the hide.

Hopefully going to spend a bit more time there on sunday morning so will let you know what i find later.

You had any little egret there recently- just asking as i had one at stone creek not a million miles away on monday.

Cant say ive seen any little egret for a good few months now james. Used to be regular sighting last summer-hopefully start seeing them more often again.

Had a good few hours on The Strays last sunday.
Set off at about 7.30am and got great views of a barn owl hunting the farmland.
Good numbers of Shelduck and redshank on the mudflats as usual.
Was also pleased to see a group of 8 avocet feeding in the shallows before the hide. Good numbers of skylark and meadow pipits also seen along the walk to the hide.

Got to the hide at about 8.30am.
Group of 50-60 godwits roosting in the shallows just in front of the hide.
Also 15-20 teal, great black backed gull, common gull, mallard and grey plover spread over the riverside mudflats.

Also very pleased to see not long before leaving the hide a female marsh harrier flying low and fast right down the side of the hide.

Had an early morning walk along the reserve yesterday.Tide was right out so was a little quiet but still good numbers of shelduck and curlew on the flats and meadow pipit, whitethroat and skylark in the surrounding fields.

Further along the reserve towards the hide I saw 2 roe deer close up and also 7 little egret along the way.
Good numbers of black headed and great black backed gulls, swallow, swift and house martins.
2 mallard
1 tufted duck
2 heron
8 reed bunting
2 carrion crow

Had another early morning walk along the the reserve this morning before going to work.
Set off at about 6am, really nice clear morning-just started to rain before I left for home after visit.
