Orange Neck Bands - Greylag Geese (1 Viewer)

I thought that I had found a rare species of goose the other weekend.

I was driving in the country on route to our local birdwatching group meet and low and behold in a field by the road there were 2 geese with orange banding around their neck.

I came to an abrupt stop, got out the binos and was so disappointed to find 2 greylag geese with orange banding.

I don't know anything about banding and what I should have been looking to trace on the band. Maybe you could enlighten me.

Also assuming I was able to read the details printed on the bands.......who should I tell?

Honestly, I was like a dog with 2 tails when I saw what I thought were a couple of rarities !!! You can just imagine, can't you. What a noodle.

I've read a few orange collars this year. The ones I have read were from Loch Eye Ross-shire. I guess orange mean they are UK ringed birds which are presumed to be from the Iceland population.

These birds with orange collars could be from one of several projects, including ones in Yorkshire. To make sure these are properly recorded, just fill out the form at www.ring.ac and someone will be able to provide you with details of your bird.

I saw 4 neck ringed Greylags tonight, not too far from where rin saw them.

Orange CIA, CIC, CIO and BTP. I have emailed both the contacts above. It was really useful info. Thnks very much. :t:

You can report all these sightings at www.ring.ac which is a website run by BTO on behalf of the European Ringing Schemes. Details will be sent onto the appropriate ringer/co-ordinator.

Many thanks

Thanks for that, I did do that but the records page kept locking on me. So I put an email to them instead.
