I have not tried it, but the only autofocus improvement mentioned is when using the "all targets" mode, which I have never used and wouldn't make a lot of sense for bird photography – though I think I sometimes see it mentioned as an option for birds in flight.

In any event, you may already be aware, but OM previously indicated they were not going to add the incremental autofocus improvements in the OM-1 mk ii to the previous OM-1 via software update.

I have seen that, as well as the note that AF could not reach the same level on mk 1 due to the difference in hardware. However, there could possibly be some level of improvement anyway? The Mark 1 is available at strongly reduced price right now.

So, synchronized IS between body and lens is not important to you?
My current rig does not have synch IS, and I wonder how many more keepers I would have if it did synch. It does okay as it is, but I look forward to having synch IS some day.
I guess G9II is not in the running?

i made the update just yesterday, with the OL share app. very easy and quick, but for some reason i lost my settings, it could be my fault but i am sure i saved it.

used it today for pre capture with a hoopoe as i was waiting for it to raise its crest, the bird detect square and the little square of the eye is sticky and do not disappear when you half press for long as it use to before. tried some flight shots with squacoo herons not sure if its really better than before, need more time. will keep you updated.

Re synch-is, less important for most bird photo. I very rarely go below 1/400, and the real advantage of synch-is is when a stationary target allows you to go much longer shutter time.

M4/3 struggles in low light. If possible I will trade shutter speed for lower ISO. Winter is coming, so the days of sun and 1/2000 are numbered. I just shot owls in a dark barn at 1/20. This BIF of a willet was shot at 1/250 on a cloudy day near sunset, which gave a nice (though unintented) background blur.

It is possible to get by without synch IS, so maybe I am overstating its importance. Adopting a stable shooting stance, using trees, posts, and rocks for support, breath control, a smooth shutter press, are all things that should be done to help the camera succeed. That said, birds are very challenging subjects, and any advantage we can give ourselves might make a difference.

I did the update via OL share too. Like you, I lost the C1 and C2 settings (I don't use C3/4), as well as most other custom settings. Odd because after the update installed I was invited to re-install saved settings, which I believe I did. That said, I haven't specifically saved any settings 'outside' of the camera, to any other external device, assuming they would be held on internal camera memory? Maybe it means restore settings from elsewhere?

I updated my OM1 a few days ago via the OM Workspace programme, the only thing I lost was the time and date. Everything else seems to be fine.

PS my C1 to C4 settings were backed up prior to the update and again after it concluded

Time and date needed resetting on mine too.

I've tried updating via Workspace a couple of times but for some reason my Macbook Pro won't connect because of some sort of security blockage. I'm not sure if the refusal is on the part of Workspace or Mac OS. It's odd because it does connect and can see the camera well enough to download images perfectly, just not well enough to update camera firmware. Because of that, I have to use OL Share for the updates.

Yep, a message pops up in Workspace pointing to some sort of security setting conflict but for the life of me I can't find what needs to be enabled to resolve it.

Not life threatening as OL Share gets the update done, just a bit of a faff to have to reconstruct the custom settings.

First world problems and all that...

As a matter of interest, can you save / back up custom settings in the OM Workspace app, or will it not talk to the camera at all?

Bob, coincidently a video popped up on my Youtube account just now, about using a Macbook Pro for firmware updates and bricking the OM1, this guy goes off on a bit of a rant

and he obviously did no research prior to trying the update, apparently, OM Systems put out a press release in Japan about the Macbook Pro security problem and it has been discussed online for quite a time, worth reading the comments as it is discussed there, worth a quick watch so as not to cause you problems when trying to update future firmware using the Mac. FWIW

Thanks Chris - I think I had previously come across some discussion of problems with Mac and OM WS for updates and the associated risks which is why I defaulted to using the OL share app instead. I think I looked into it a bit when the 1.5 version firmware came out. Suffice to say I gave it up as a bad job and glad I did. Thanks for the link - I'll have a look just as a matter of interest but I'd better stick with OL share for any further updates.

You can never be too careful, wise choice using the OL share app, at least it confirms what not to do

I've not tried to be honest - the OM WS app does 'see' the camera and downloads images and videos so may be able to save custom settings as you say. Might be something I'll try when I'm brave enough - as it happens my custom settings are not that complex (I only use C1 and C2), so doesn't take too long to re configure.

When I tried the firmware update via OM WS app it seemed to launch a new window and looked to be running outside of the normal app interface - that was the point at which it reported 'unable to connect due to security conflicts' (or similar) and wanted a (Mac) security setting changing, but I couldn't find that setting anywhere in the Mac OS environment, so gave up as I didn't want to create further issues.

It feels to me like what is happening is that the Mac is seeing the two memory cards as external drives via the OM app, hence allowing import of images etc but isn't connecting to the camera itself as a computer/network entity to permit the firmware update.
