John Whitehead (1860-1899) English explorer, collector in Borneo 1885-1888, the Philippines 1893-1896, and Hainan 1899 (Aerodramus, Calyptomena, syn. Dicaeum haematostictum, subsp. Dicrurus leucophaeus (ex Buchanga palawanensis Whitehead, 1890), Harpactes, syn. Leptocoma sperata henkei, subsp. Lophura nycthemera, syn. Nisaetus nipalensis, syn. Pachycephala grisola plateni, subsp. Prioniturus discurus, Sitta, syn. Strix seloputo wiepkeni, syn. Trichastoma bicolor, subsp. Turdus javanicus, subsp. Turnix sylvaticus, Urocissa, Urosphena, subsp. Zosterops japonicus, Zosterornis).

I am just wondering if the bryologist John Whitehead mentioned https://books.google.de/books?id=s2kQEAAAQBAJ&pg=PA736 has any connection to our John Whitehead?

Martin ('Taphrospilus'), re. the Birds in post #1, I'd go for the second guy, mentioned in the same Dictionary Of British And Irish Botantists And Horticulturalists:

Whithehead, John, Ornithologist.jpg

I think the "Cotton operative. Bryologist. ..." namesake is of less (far less) relevance.

Don't you?

But don't forget Paul's claim (from May 2021) in thread HBWAlive Key; mission accomplished or mission impossible? (post #570, here, or below):
...

Birth7 Apr 1861 Muswell Hill, Middlesex, England
Residence1891 Bickley, Kent, England
Marriage1897 West Ham, Essex, England
Death2 Jun 1899 Hainan, China
FatherJeffery Ludlam Barton Whitehead (1831-1915)

Also note that Mearns & Mearns (2022*) has him (in Vol. 1, on pp. 376–380) as:
John Whitehead (1860–1899), ...
... English ornithologist and professional collector who worked on Corsica, Borneo and Hainan.
[...]
... born at Colney Hatch Lane, Muswell Hill, in London, on 30 June 1860, ...

In line with today's Key:
whiteheadi
John Whitehead (1860-1899) English explorer, collector in Borneo 1885-1888, the Philippines 1893-1896, and Hainan 1899 ...
● ...

Thus, was he born 30th of June 1860, or 7th of April 1861 ... ?!?

In both cases; i
n/at Muswell Hill, in (either way) London/Middlexex ...

Actually, I'm quite surprised that there are different claims of the Birth of such a celebrated, and 'well-known' guy.

Clearly he's not that well known.

PS. James, I miss one collection locality (in the Key) – Corsica, where he found the Corsican Nuthatch Sitta whiteheadi Sharpe 1884, (see the OD in post #1)

John Whitehead (1860–1899) was a British explorer and naturalist who collected in Borneo (1885–1888), the the Philippines (1893–1896) and Hainan (1899). He wrote Explorations of Mount Kina Balu, North Borneo (1893) and he may have been the first European to reach the summit of the mountain. He died of fever in Hainan, at the age of 38. An amphibian and five mammals are named after him.

Thanks for these. There are 5 Whitehead's wildlife found in Mt. Kinabalu and endemic to Borneo where I live. A must see for visiting birders...
