Not all fatballs are the same ! (1 Viewer)

Due to this extended foul weather I was running low on fatballs that I purchased from a petfood store some miles away.

I spotted some on sale in Morrisons, so bought a pack of eight, thinking they would solve the problem.

Don't know what's in them but feeding virtually ceased when the originals ran out and it seems the birds would rather starve than eat the new offering. Even the squirrel has stopped raiding!

Some of them do appear very low quality, I`v taken to putting out buggy suet logs at around £2-3 each, the birds adore these and they do seem high quality.

We've seen the same effect with some Fatballs from Twooze. They were like cannonballs!. I broke them up with a large hammer. This seemed to work and they get eaten in this state.
The suet blocks were'nt popular. very few birds were having them. I thought that this may be because there is 'easier' food on the feeders, so I put them through a cheese grater and this works. They love them now!

I have tried all kinds of different makes of fatballs but most got ignored until i bought some Peckish fat balls and they worked a treat but even they aren't as good as home made.

The birds won't eat my cheapo shop bought ones. I have mixed them with mine. lard, porrige oats and mealworm. The birds only go for mine. I noticed when I tried to melt some cheap ones down they smelled of biscuit. Maybe thats the problem.
