Swarovski will install the new mounting receptacle in the earlier 42mm models for (free), if you buy a tripod adapter from an authorized dealer.

The two TA adapters are functionally different in terms of attachment:
a) The long available one for the SLC uses a seperate stud that attaches to the binocular, and then the adapter attaches to it, in contrast;
b) The new adapter for the NL fits directly into a socket on the just introduced NL x52 *

From the instruction sheets, TAs-NL vs TAs-SLC:

For some more images of the adapter for the SLC (including the collet fingers in the adapter that grasp the stud),
along with the 3rd party offering from Outdoorsman for the previous NL production, see: Tripod stud for Swarovski NL

* As SuperDuty indicates, when the NL x52 and the adapter were announced, it was also stated that:
a) previous NL x42 and x32 production could be modified to accept the adapter, and;
b) ongoing NL x42 and x32 production would be adapter compatible.

Looking at the page for the NL adapter today, more information has been added:

Any idea whether the studs are compatible with the old SLC version?
They are not
Due to wording, I'm not sure what question was answered here. The new mounting system certainly differs from the old one. Can the receptacle for it be retrofitted to SLCs, as well as older NLs? To me it seems much better than having a permanently mounted stud sticking out where I like to hold a bin.

I’m also not sure if the older NL needs to be modified in order for the new part to fit, the hinge and focus action on my 12X42 are both superb, so I’m a bit reluctant to send them in for a modification I may never use, on the other hand I might enjoy that feature sometime in the future, and I don’t know how much leaving them as is will affect resell value. When I spoke to them yesterday, they said I was the very first person to call about it, and they won’t actually have the parts in until next week, I’ll call back next Wednesday to find out what the modification would cost if a person doesn’t buy the Tripod adapter and pays only for the receptacle installation, but i’m sure more than likely the best thing is to buy the piece and get the free install.

Both my 15x and 7x SLCs are fitted with studs and work well for me. I find the connection very secure and quick to use. If I venture down the NL route it's useful to know.

This system is much better. I am not a fan of the lever on the Swaro. They also have both NL studs available with no modification needed.
Agreed. Aziak equipment also makes a stellar tripod adapter that goes directly in the optic and stays there. No need to carry any additional pieces in the field, it’s far lighter and has the arca-Swiss built in. I’ve been a long time outdoorsman’s stud user, but I think Aziak is a superior concept. The owner is an awesome guy too, one man shop. It’s a heck of a lot cheaper too.

I had the tripod adapter fitted to my 12x42 at the Birdfair today. Very quick and neatly done; looks as if it has been there from new.

After that, I went to buy the tripod adapter itself but it had only come into stock after the Viking team had left for the fair so it should be with me on Tuesday.

By the way, in answer to the concern raised above, no issue with either the hinge or the focus after the fitting.
