Nikon P610 (1 Viewer)

As it appears to be a P600 with better WiFi, added GPS and an improved evf , I would check out reviews and opinions on that.
There is a thread on the P600 started on the 14th April last year if you do a P600 search here. One of the more useful links in that thread is http://www.imaging-resource.com/PRODS/best-superzoom-2014/best-superzoom-2014-A.HTM
Whether some of the other areas folks wanted improving apart from those noted, I guess we will have to wait and see.

I bought one a while back and love the improved noise control over my DX D300. Noise was creeping in and noticeable at ISO 400 on the D300, and while noise ( or grain as some call it ) is arty to some for certain photos, it doesnt work at all for birds

Shooting at ISO 1600 is a real help for birding, as it gives me fast shutter speeds. The D300 has been resigned to shots in good light and mainly UWA / static stuff, where speed is not so critical.

Also, having a FX and a DX means i'm changing lenses less often

I think Musoman misread D610 for P610 according to his kit list. Easily done when manufacturers have very different cameras with almost identical names! The improved evf sounds good - I may have a look at one if the opportunity presents itself.

I have read a fair bit of posts on superzoom cameras. I remember very few positive remarks on nikon superzooms (different from their dSLRs)

As Neils says, Nikon have had some catching up to do with their superzooms, but the P600 proved one of the best superzooms for image quality but slow for continuous shooting etc. if that is your style. Another big problem it has was a low res evf.

Preliminary information on the P610 is that the evf has been fixed. If Nikon have done something about the speed of the brute it may turn out to be one of the better superzooms for birds - we await the first proper reviews anytime now.

Google translate tells us that it was being charged for the pic of the camera and

You shoot in the P610, the first one is this.
I have a copy at 60-fold hand optics.
I thought great might ^^ v

For the first moon pic and

Up...

for the second. Well its a start.

Thanks iveljay,

fingers crossed the owner is able to get a decent days shooting in tomorrow, preferably with a few bird pics thrown in!

The Coolpix P610 is a good camera

I recently acquired the Coolpix P610 after reading about the P900 here and elsewhere. It is my 1st bridge camera, so I am no great judge. But the reasons I chose the P610 over the P900 were:
1. Weight and size
2. I could use a lower ISO because the VR would be more effective on a lighter camera.
3. The closer focusing capability of the P610
4. The fact that it got a TIPA award - so likely to have less glitches.
Any case, after using the camera for a few days I have concluded that it has a great lens and sterling image stabilization capabilities. It suffers from the normal small sensor handicaps, so it is no DSLR killer.
Here is an image of a Pheasant-tailed Jacana that I shot with the camera today. It is shot at full zoom, ISO 100 and is only slightly cropped and resized.
Cheers!

Anyone who owns this camera care to share what settings they use? Are you using birdwatching mode or auto, program etc?

Just bought it last weekend. The Bird mode seems to zoom to 800mm which I am not sure is that useful? I guess it is just a quick zoom bottom.

Anyway, I'll likely be shooting on Shutter priority when it is birds.

Here are my first shoots from last weekend (all on a tripod with stabilization turned off.)

If you press ok in birdwatching mode it auto zooms to 800mm, saves doing it manually didn't take long to take it to full optical from there (I try not to use the digital zoom)
