Nikon 10x25 HG L (1 Viewer)

I am looking for a good pair of compacts that I can keep by me in the van while delivering mail in rural Surrey.

I do not want to pay Leica prices and Warehouse Express have Nikon 10x25 HG L's available for £259, which seems like a good price.

Are there better alternatives ?

The Nikon's are better than the Leica's so why should pay Leica prices.

I tried the 8x20 HG L's and they are as good as it gets.

I'd say go for them at that price. I can't agree with the comment above even though I'm a great fan of Nikon. Optically and mechanically the Nikons are very good, of course.

Just a thought -for leaving in the car, have you thought about the Opticron Taiga? It seems to be excellent optically (see the Alula review) and is a much cheaper alternative.

You know Opticron's are not well known on this side of the pond. I don't even know where you could go look at a pair locally. I have never seen them. Everybody on this forum gives them good reviews though. Thanks for the tip though.

Sorry - I forgot about that! The Taigas also have a narrower field of view, I've just read (on the Alula review). Either Nikon or Leica will fit the bill, it seems. Go for the least expensive.

Many thanks for this information... is the Alula review available online ?

The review is an Acrobat file so you'll need the free Adobe Acrobat software on your computer in order to view it. Click here to see it. Taking into account its cost, it does seem a bargain. If you search on this forum, you'll find many positive comments on it.

I have both Nikon HG 8x20 and 10x25. Both are very, very good. I prefer the 10x25. Some people grumble about the placement of the focus wheel on the Nikon, i.e. at the objective lens end. I don't find it a problem at all.

The Alula review mentioned earlier is very good. Another review you may find useful is at Better View Desired.

I have just bought a pair of little used Taigas on ebay for £48 and will keep them in my car/van for birding 'opportunities'. I will let you know how they perform.

Thanks Steve, I was looking for this while reading another thread. I could not find it, however. So here it is. Great. :bounce:
I just wonder why I did not find it on the Alula page.

Try adjusting the focus on the Nikon's with your thumb UNDER the focus wheel and your second finger on TOP of the focus wheel. It gives you twice the power and more precision. I prefer the focus wheel at the far end. With the Leica Ultravids my finger is too cramped up for space. Just a personal thing though.

Taigas

What are your early impressions, Bill? That was a good price indeed.

The Taigas arrived this morning and my first impressions are very favourable !

The binoculars were 'as new', and supplied with a receipt from In Focus dated 8.11.06 for £89.

It has been quite a dark morning, but the clarity of these 8x25 were very good. It took a shirt while to get used to such small diameter eye-pieces, but this was soon overcome. I would certainly recommend these to anyone who needs a spare pair to keep in the car.

Thanks again for the tip.

Nikon 10x25 LXL Premier

I have plenty of 8x binos and have been thinking of jumping up to a 10 power. As I was trying out various full size mid-priced 10s I picked up the little Nikon and was very impressed with its clarity and resolution even though it was dark outside. The view was very satisfying and I am pretty sure I am going to buy them as I have no compact glass. These really do appear the best of the best.
I can see myself carrying them on every road trip with great ease.
I tried the Leica Ultra 10x25 in the same store and was not impressed, especially at a $700+ price.

Yes I own the 10x25 LXL

These are the BEST small binoculars

I own many binoculars from the mid-range to high end euro models. I wear glasses and these little gems are great. the FOV is limited but the view is very satisfying even for all day. I am amazed at how fantastic the view is...but then they do cost around $500. I have owned other small binocs, Celestron Regal 8x25, Vector 8x20...and found both lacking and have given them away to friends. These Nikons are great and will accompany me on every trip. As a birder these are a great back up pair and are small enough to fit in a jacket pocket. I use them daily on my dog walks.
Find the price too high? I spent $225 on the Regals, another $100 on the Vectors. I should have just saved and then sprung for the Nikons to start with and I would have had great binoculars that will last a lifetime. As an eyeglass wearer I highly recommend these 10x glasses. I tried the Leica Ultra and Zeiss comparable models and found the Nikons far superior.

Has anyone compared the Nikon 10x25 LXL with the Steiner Skyhawk 10x26?

I wear specs and own the Steiner, but I am not satisfied with them; I find the FOV not good enough, and the focusing wheel too stiff in the Steiner.

Have not had the opportunity to try the Nikons 10x25, so I am wondering if they are much better than the Steiners?

Greetings, Ronald

I have not had a chance to see the steiners but I must still recommend the Nikon 10x25 LXL. the FOV is limited but the view from edge to edge is CLEAR. They take some getting used to, but I can find flying birds in the sky...not as fast as with wide FOV 8xs but for the tiny size there has to be a trade off.
Order from Eagle optics, you can return them if you do not like them.
