Could anyone advise a good location where I could get to see Nightjars.
I have tried a couple of locations from Where to watch birds in Cumbria , Lancs & Cheshire.

How ever, no luck yet.

Thanks

Hi Steven

If you find the right spot they will be easily seen. If you click on the link I have given you that's where they are. You have to park up in Seven Springs car park and it is approximately about a mile walk from there, could be a bit less.

Why don't you give monkeyman (Al) a ring see if he can help.

Hi reader,

I've clicked on it but none of the pictures will load, i'm classed as a mature teen on aol which dosn't allow me to access certain things, perhaps this is one of them. The pictures are non existent and there is a little cross in the corner.

Maybe if you and al are not busy one of the days we can all go and have a look for them, if you'd like.

Hi Steven

I am sending you an e-mail. I will add a couple of links to that to see if any of those work. If not try and get into either streetmap.co.uk or multimap.com and type in SK005195 and that site at Cannock Chase will come up.

Well the multi map one does anywar, the street map one is just being an a**e hole at the moment, but i still got the multimap one anyway.

Hi Andy,

I've looked at the website but i can't seem to find anything on Cannock Chase, it's probably just me because there has to be something on it. I have found some information on the commes valley which i am visiting on a trip with other birders later on in August. I am hoping to get Wood warbler, Pied flycatcher and Redstart there.

Hi Reader,

Are they easily seen around the Cannock chase?

I went to Cannock Chase at the beginning of June on my recent trip to Britain hoping to see Nightjars. I was using instructions in a certain "where to watch birds in.." but I didn't find any Nightjars there despite what seemed like perfect habitat and excellent weather conditions, i.e. warm still night, lots of moths flying around. I've heard Cannock Chase is a good area for Nightjars but get some site info from locals before you go!

Still it's a beautiful area, Cuckoos and Tawny Owls calling. Walking back alone through the forest for a couple of miles in pitch black though isn't recommended. There was something in there screaming that if it wasn't a Chimpanzee I don't know what it was!!!! Creepy.

I had to go to Norfolk to find my Nightjars, one of the best birds I've ever seen (and heard) I think!

The best place is in the Sherbrook valley. Park in the Katyn Memorial Car Park and walk down the path into the valley where they are easy to hear/see given reasonable conditions. Good spot for Long Eared owls as well and woodcock.

The sherbrook Valley is part of Cannock Chase. The Katyn Memorial car park is well signposted. A quick web search will provide you with directions.

Cheers,

Tom

No Problem Dan.

The Skipton one has me curious as I hadn't heard anything around that area but if you do want to go to Cannock I would take note of the areas mentioned. I have never gone Nightjar hunting around Sherbrook Valley but I'm told it is good. Where I go on Cannock you usually see 2 or three of them quite easily, and it's not that far from Manchester.

Better bet would be a weekend in North Norfolk and finish the Saturday night off in my favourite place near Sandringham. There the Nightjars are within a one minute walk from the car and there are plenty of them, as well as plenty of Woodcock as well. Add to that the special birds of Norfolk and it all totals up to a magic weekend for all.

The main article in this month's Birdwatching magazine is on Nightjars. But of the 6 sites they mention as 'the best Nightjar sites' the most northerly is Cannock Chase. So I, too, am a bit puzzled by the mention of Skipton.
