When I was cleaning my teeth at 1.15 this morning, I heard a woodpigeon calling. I peered out of the bathroom window, but it was pitch black and I could see nothing.

I know some birds do sing at night, but is it unusual for a woodpigeon to be calling at that time?

I can't find anything that says Wood Pigeons call at night, Kits, though lots of other birds do. It could be that the bird was disturbed by something.

I quite often hear a wood pigeon at night usually just when i am dropping off to sleep ;-)

Thank you Wendy for the links, but not definitely not a Tawny. We get those as well. It was a wood pigeon, but why it would be cooing at that time I don't know!

Ive been investigating your interesting Q Kits . :news: as Ive never heard a WP at night.
After several revolting pages of shooting them & a few effy posts from charming bloggers, I rephrased the Q & stumbled upon a good site entitled "Night Ears" by Graham Thomson (chief scout leader)
Unfortunately, it didn't answer your question but I thoroughly enjoyed reading it!

Hi Kits,

Can't find anything in my books saying that Woodies (or other Columbidae) call at night. However, it does say that they will call if frightened or under threat so maybe the one that you heard was disturbed by a night predator.
It is a slightly different call though so......

More from my other source seems to back the idea that the woodie had been disturbed by a predator, perhaps a fox......?

Could well have been disturbed by a fox, Wendy. We get them prowling.

Well, well. Guess what? OH woke me at 3.30 this morning (bless his little cotton bedsocks!) to listen to a Woodie calling in the garden! It continued for about five minutes and then fell silent. The moonlight was so bright that it was almost like daylight out there and we wondered if it had thought that it was already dawn.

I have heard the call a couple of times since I started this thread, so it seems that some of them do get confuzzled and call when they should be snoozing.
