Hi.

Is anyone aware of any of any published studies on the (internal) phylogeny of the Acanthisittidae? I'm particularly interested in genetic distances between / dates of divergence for the two extant taxa.

The complete genome of Acanthisitta has been sequenced, but there is apparently very little from Xenicus. GenBank has only microsat and Toll-like receptor sequences; distances can be computed rather easily based on these (via a BLAST search, using the Xenicus sequences, on the Acanthisitta scaffolds), but would probably not be straightforward to interpret...

Anyway, it may be worthwhile to have a link to the other thread here.

(It might be interesting to see where the rather shallow rockwren-Pachyplichas divergence that is found here [Fig.1] falls in comparison to the divergence between the two main rockwren haplogroups identified by Weston 2014 [pdf] (see Fig.3.3, p.35)... [Northern vs. southern rockwrens in Weston 2014 was one third of rockwren vs. rifleman; rockwren vs. Pachyplichas here seems to be proportionately less...?])

Lyall’s Wren is basal to the other members of Acanthisittidae. Mitchell et al. 2016, Gill et al. 2010.

Traversia lyalli forms a very ancient lineage (early Oligocene, 30mya ~). Relict species within Acanthisittidae or distinct family, Traversiidae ? 🤔
