I hope someone can give me some advice. I live in the country and today found a fledgling Blue Jay on ground walking funny and a cat pounced on it. I rescued the little thing from the cat but evidently it had been attacked by a cat before and had gotten away because it is missing a foot. The parents were flying around anxiously. There are many cats on our place-strays that show up and barn cats so we built a nest in a cage we have and put the fledgling in there to protect it. We had tried to place it up in one of the trees that the parents were in but it fell right out and was about to be attacked again.I checked and we don't have a wildlife rehabilitator anywhere near us, we are in a very rural area. I need advice on what to do. I'm willing to take care of it, if it is possible. Can it be rehabilitated with only one foot? Are there bird sanctuaries for injured birds like this. The little guy has such a will to live I hate to not give it a chance. I just checked on him and he's resting very quietly in the little nest we built. What do I feed it? How often do fledglings eat? I just need some advice. I have a degree in Animal Science and Medical Technology but have no knowledge on wild birds. The parents are a pair of Blue Jays that have entertained us for a few years. They were trying to attack the cats to keep them off the baby but were not having any success. They stopped screaming and hollaring after I picked the baby up and just watched me. The nesting cage is sitting hidden amongst some tall lillies underneath the trees that the parents are in but we shut the door so cats couldn't get to it. Any advice?
