Names of Black Colored Birds? (1 Viewer)

Hey all,

I'm writing a short story and would like to tap into your collective knowledge. I'm looking for names of birds that are (or appear to be) almost completely black in color. So far I've got:

Raven, crow, grackle, thrush...

Can anyone think of any more? Additionally, what is the largest bird you are aware of that is black (or almost completely black) in color?

Thanks so much! :)

Cormorant, Shag, Black Scoter, Black Grouse---plenty more
The largest is probably Black Swan (from Australia)

Here are some that spring to mind:

Magnificent Frigatebird
Black Vulture
Black Swift
Greater Ani
Smooth-billed Ani
Groove-billed Ani
Black-fronted Nunbird
Long-wattled Umbrellabird
Amazonian Umbrellabird
...nearly all the crows/ravens
Great Thrush
Brewer's Blackbird
Rusty Blackbird
Common Grackle
Boat-tailed Grackle
Great-tailed Grackle
Shiny Cowbird
Bronzed Cowbird

Black Swan is a good one. Another mostly black Australian one that is very neat is Musk Duck.

In the uk you can have Blackbird ...

From a US perspective Black or possibly Turkey Vulture would be a contender (mostly black)

Black Hawk Eagle, Blue-billed, Velvety & Crested Black Tyrants, Black & Golden-winged Manakin from South America, Verraux's & Long-crested Eagle, Sooty Chat, Northern & Southern Black Flycatchers in Africa, Common Koel in Asia, Phainopepla in USA. And so many more. A lot of these are mostly, rather than entirely black, with quite a few appearing black until the fly and reveal other colours (usually white) on wings, rump or tail. Best of luck with your story, and do please let us know when it's written how we may best access it.

Cheers

James

Sooty Oystercatcher, Black Rail, Spangled Drongo (which has iridescent festhers), the various Black Cockatoos (which may have some red, white or yellow in the tail), Palm Cockatoo... all from Australia.

......... but thrushes aren't black ;)

Chris

You're right of course, most aren't, but then again many are (or near enough). Blackbird, Great, Glossy-black, Pale-eyed, Yellow-legged & Sooty Thrushes, probably a few more.

And to add to the general list - Bliue-black Grassquit, Blue-black Grosbeak, Variable Seedeater, Lesser Seedfinch....

Hey Royda here are some black birds I know off.. Hope this helps.. :)

American Crow
Boat-tailed Grackle
Double-crested Cormorant
Black Tern
Horicon Marsh bird
Anhinga
Common Raven
American Coot (it looks like a duck)
Phainopepla
Turkey Vulture
Black Oystercatcher
Rusty Blackbird
Black Guillemot
