Mute Swans pairing up already ? (1 Viewer)

The local train journey between Gt Yarmouth & Acle goes across the marshes where the Mute Swan is a common enough bird to see.

This last week or so I've seen several (4 or 5) ''pairs'' of them. My first thought as it's still January was that they happened to be 2 birds near each other, but on subsequent trips they seem to be 2 together at the same places - usually near a typical nesting site such as a bank of a ditch, which would suggest to me that they are indeed pairs.

Is this normal for January ?

Faithful for life, if seperated they go down hill fast.
so carlos probably checking out nest site.
bert.

The Mute Swan pair on the western end of my local disused canal at Coombe Hill in Gloucestershire are back (I know them because one is coloured ringed.). This afternoon (25 Jan), one was nest building only metres from last years nest which was successful with 2 youngsters growing to full size and leaving the area a few weeks ago.
