Mull sea eagles (1 Viewer)

salty

geordie birder
im off to Oban this weekend for a few days, and im going to pop over to mull to explore the island a little.

any tips on where the best place to view the sea eagles or golden eagles will be great thanks!

Hi Salty

Grass Point is a good place for the Sea Eagles and around Loch na Keal for Goldies.

I think Sandra (Taylor) was one of the latest to report on a trip there... you'll find it in Vacational Trip Reports

Hope this helps - have a great time

I was on Mull for a week in August. Fantastic place! See this report:

http://www.birdforum.net/showthread.php?t=120494

The Grasspoint area and the road to it is where we saw sea eagles. It's worth stopping by the bridge as we saw our first here. Saw a goldie in Glen More. Also saw distant goldies soaring from the ferry on the mainland side, just as the ferry was leaving Craignuir.

Have a good trip.

Mull

thanks for the tips folks. i will let you know how i get on, im looking forward to it.

We had a wonderful week at the beginning of May. We stayed in Tobermory. We did go to Loch Frisa, which was great, but we were a little too early. However, the two chicks are busy flying around and you can follow their progress on http://www.rspb.org.uk/wildlife/tracking/mulleagles/index.asp

We also crossed to Ardnamurchan, and, near the Lighthouse (where there is a cafe!) we had a good and prolonged view of a golden eagle.
I went out on the Wildlife Safari with Richard Atkinson. He took us to the places best suited for otters, sea eagles and goldies. See his site on http://www.mullwildlife.co.uk/newpics/photos/harrier.html

The next day, we went out again, and found a Goldie's nest on the cliff, with the female sitting, and the male flying above - great! These sightings were in the south-west of the island. The western seaboard is fantastically beautiful. The one problem.... very few watering holes or loos!!

Have a great time!

Sorry Delia - haven't done my report yet. Maybe this will spur me on to get my finger out!

Came back from a week on Mull a couple of weeks ago Salty. We saw WTE almost daily loafing around on a spit of sand right at the bottom end (Knock) of Loch na Kael. Three together one day. Lengthy views of them too down Glen More - with the 3 lochs down to our left, the eagles were above the hills over to our right. GEs too in this area. One juvenile we watched for half an hour feeding on carrion (a bird by the look of the feathers floating round it) in some rocks near the skyline. No WTE at Grasspoint but a golden eagle perched in a tree about half way along the road to Grasspoint. And we've never failed with GE on the track from Knock up the side of Loch Ba. When you've cleared the copse of trees scan the hills up to your right.

Salty - it's the annual Rally of Mull this weekend which means many roads will be closed off and Mull if almost taken over by the rally watchers. 10th/11th/12th

just heard about the rally!

hoping i can still find a quiet spot away from people to see the eagles....we'll see how it goes.

Have you pre-booked the ferry Salty? When we tried once before for that weekend they were fully booked.

Maybe you'd need to go via Loch Aline-Fishnish if not.

i will have to see whats available on the saturday. if i cant get over or if it will be too busy i may go to another island.

well despite Friday being a complete washout...along with Saturday morning waiting for our ferry to mull........we managed to get over, AND we got to see a sea eagle!

drove straight upto tobermory for fish and chips, avoiding the rally cars. then back down to loch frisa to the eagle view point...nothing but dozens of buzzards.

loch na keal was very windy, with a rally stage going on, so nothing big there either.

going back to the ferry port later on, we decided to pop round to lochdon not expecting to see anything with us only having 30 minutes to spare until we had to be back round to the ferry que.

lovely and calm water, sun was shining and the first bird i saw as i got out of the car was a sea eagle!

it had just took off and was slowly doing its best to gain some height across the rear of the loch, heading to the right for the higher ground. we had a good 10 minutes or so view of it, watching it climb higher and eventually after catching some thermals it dipped behind a hillside.

Hi Salty

I'm so pleased to managed to find one - impressive aren't they.

Congratulations on your other life event tooB :)

yeah, very impressive bird. could tell what it was before i even had to look through the bins!

very very heavy flight pattern, im surprised they can take off at all the size of them. i wasnt expecting to see one, but i was hoping i did.........so im over the moon. especially as Mull took a good soaking for what most of been days before hand. the rain stopped as we boarded the ferry and the sun was out by the time we got there, and stayed out!

only had 10x50 bins with me, but it was still an impressive sight.

Hallo Salty
" surprised they can take off at all the size of them."
Glad you like to see the WTSE, and a small comment to they "take off"
If the bird is water logged and have eaten a good meal, it can happen they not can make(will) "take off" for several hours after eating. I have looked after a adult bird so have try several times (3) from c 1m over the water line, and fall in water and have to swim ashore.
First after drying the wing as a shag and with increasing wind the bird take off after c 10 hour.
The problem can come to the bird if someone mean that the bird is injured, so best to hold a distance.
