most powerful hawk? (1 Viewer)

I would probably say Goshawk. The female can take an adult mountain hare and that must take some doing! I know that both the other hawks can take large prey but the goshawk to me, just exudes power and ferosity.

I've handled quite a few of all three species and can say without a doubt that the redtail possesses far more strength than Harris or Goshawk.
True, the Gos can subdue challenging quarry. They do so by virtue of their speed and agility rather than strength.
In my view, the harris hawk possesses many of the qualities of both the other birds. Faster and more agile than the redtail (also very quick afoot) they have larger, stronger feet and talons than Gos.

wow this is shocking I had the deep rooted assumption the goshawk had the strongest tallons dispite being smaller then the other 2

you here so many stories on how powerful and legendary goshawks are, and almost nothing about red tail or haris hawk power

I picked red tail and haris hawk because i know both are able to take full grown rabbits. ALso both are large hawks. I really was just trying to see if any hawk could match a goshawks power! THIS Is so shocking!

Years ago, when the winters were colder, Goshawks were rather common around my area. I once saw one come busting through the scrub oak in pursuit of a Ruffed Grouse. Awesome! Absolutely ferocious!

I'm kind of embarrassed to say that I've had the experience of dislodging the talons of all three birds from the arms of careless handlers.
I bear a few scars from harris hawks and redtails myself.
In addition to the power of its talons the redtail has the power to crash through cover like a cinder block.
When pursuing prey through cover a goshawk does more weaving and reaching.
A harris hawk is good at both crashing and penetrating cover and has long legs .

We gota remember though individual birds vary, specially if they are captive born, i know golden eagles born in captivty are not nearly as powerful as the ones born in the wild

So its hard to say, wonder if anyone else has had hands on experience with these hawks?

I would say Northern Goshawk (the female). In Europe they have killed Common Buzzards and Red Kites. Even the young of Ospreys in the nest.

I once listened to a talk about the interaction of Goshawk, Common Buzzard and Eagle Owl. When Goshawks built a new nest, the Buzzards left the area around the Goshawk nest.

Out of these three, Red-Tails without question! Only Bald and Golden Eagles can out power them and Great Horned Owls are about equal, but Red-Tailed Hawks out power all other North American raptors except the ones I mentioned.

The Red tailed can exert up to 200 lb square inch force which is greater than most grown men can produce. In comparison, the Philippine eagle can exert above 500lb psi. When biologist say these animals have powerful talons, these forces are what they are referring to. Awesome stuff!!!

according to falconers who have worked with both great horned owls and red tails claim that the owls tallon power is by far stronger

but out of all the hawks u guys are right research tells us the red tail is most powerful HAwk even more powerful then the aggressive goshawk!

Strictly speaking RT Hawk is a buteo and Goshawk is a accipiter so you cannot really compare the two species.

umm why not? people compare the power of a crowned eagle to a golden eagle all the time

Owls and BOps are not the same yet people compare their power as well

you can compare any species of bird you like

you can compare any species of bop
But they are both species of Eagle you cannot really compare Goshawk and RT Hawk because RT Hawk is'nt a true Hawk its a buteo. The Hawk family is the Accipiters. That also goes for Harris's Hawk you cannot really compare that with RTH and Goshawk. So the most powerful hawk is the Goshawk its the biggest Accipiter.

Even though the goshawks are not Buteos you can still compare there strengths, we're no strictly speaking here, just being curious about hawks that are roughly the same sze.

I had no idea buteos are not hawks just like new world vultures are not vultures

so if Buteos are not hawks what are they? vultures? eagles? falcons?

I don't think they actually have a collective name, the Common Buzzard(of Europe) is a close relative to the Red-Tailed Hawk but they have totally different names, it's just what they were called before DNA and taxonamy and stuff. I think Red-Tailed Hawks etc ar often called "Buteo Hawks" and Goshawks and Sparrowhawks etc are called Accipiters.
