Manfrotto 190CL (1 Viewer)

Two queries in one here, so sorry if part of this is in the wrong forum:

I recently got the Manfrotto 190CL tripod for my camera, but I'm now looking at getting a scope as I was at the coast at the weekend and realise how limited the binoculars are in such an environment.

Can anyone give any advice on how a scope would connect up to this tripod - would I be able to use the same head as is used for the camera, or would I need to invest in a new head?

I'm thinking of getting either a Leica APO-62 or APO-77 - if anyone uses either of these, which would you recommend? If I get either of these, is there a special head that I'd need to connect to the tripod? I've also got a Nikon D50 camera - is it easy enough to connect this to either of these scopes?

I'm going to Lochwinnoch at the weekend as they have an optics demo, but they don't seem to have the biggest stock in the world and I also don't know if they stock the Leica scopes, but it'll still be good to get a feel for how much more powerful scopes are than my binocs.

Hi,

What head do you have on the scope at the moment?

A 128RC (discontinued?) or a 700 would be fine, esp for the APO-62 A 701 would be better but more expensive

I love my APO-77 but it is a heavy beast. If I had found the weight to be a problem I wouldn't hesitate to swap it for the APO-62

the 190 should be ok for a Leica. I had one for 10 years until last weekend. It took me some time to work out what the CL part meant as I could only find a 190v in the catalogue. I worked out that it meant "classic" ie chrome rather than green.

The Apo77 is excellent optically but large and heavy by comparison with, say, the Zeiss 85 which has a larger objective lens, too - and its zoom offers a 50% greater field of view to make spotting easier.

The tripod will be fine. If you are tall, you might be better with an angled scope. I use the 700RC2 head with my Zeiss 85 - very smooth and stable. The tripod is attached with a removable adapter that screws into the scope's tripod mount - on which it is left permanently.

If you want to go for the ultimate in compactness and lightness but keep the optical quality, the new Nikon ED50 with 30xW is a superb baby scope and offers ED glass at a very good price.

I've got a 390RC2 head - can I just put in another quick release plate into this? I got the tripod in a special deal from Jessops.
