Llangollen area, Wales (1 Viewer)

I need to retire! ....oh I have!
United Kingdom
We are spending a weekend in Llangollen in a couple of weeks, I have searched but can't find a great deal of birding info for the area. Has anyone any information or suggestions?

Thanks
Tom

The bridge in Llangollen is a great place to see Dippers and the moorlands have healthy numbers of Black and Red Grouse. Other than that I can't think of much else. Is there anything you want to see in particular? How far would you be willing to travel?

Thanks for that, we are Willing to drive upto 90 minutes further into Wales probably go down to the RSPB reserved at Lake Vyrnwy if there are no other options
Cheers

Impressive totals!

You might be better off heading toward the coast instead of towards Vyrnwy, lots to see all along the North Coast. Vyrnwy will be very disappointing at this time of year.

dippers are a virtual gimme on any of the small rivers in the area esp the eglwyseg.

In a couple of months there will be redstart and wheatear aplenty as well as a few cuckoos, but that doesnt really help you!

If your specifically after birds maybe head to the nth wales coast, flint & point of ayr are good, nice high tide roost at point of ayr. Or you could be on the northside of the dee estuary within an hour, burton mere, imf, good all year round!

If you're just after a nice hill walk in Llangollen north of the river is better: the panorama walk is good; or slightly west the llantsilios/moel morfydd area is gorgeous; or worlds end moors and walk south along the top of the rocks; or the horseshoe pass; or offas dyke path;

This time last year we had a great grey shrike at worlds end, and the year before a dartford warbler.

Further afield there is a gg shrike at clocaenog but maybe a bit far to go.

General things worth seeing in llangollen: horseshoe falls, crow castle, valle crucis abbey, canal & pontcysyllte viaduct, chirk.

Have fun!

Thanks, I'll think we'll stay local and go for walks, as you say you never know what we might see. Especially if the weather is changing and the winds will be coming from the south.

Cheers

If you're staying local and looking for a good walk I'd get a taxi from Llan to the ford at World's End and walk back along the Eglwysyg to town, you should pick up Peregrine and have a walk along one of the best limestone scarps in Britain. A very early morning drive up onto Rhuabon Mountain will get you Black Grouse (check with RSPB for the exact location ).

Further to my earlier post, the GGS has now been reported this weekend at Worlds End! Might be worth checking out on bird guides before you visit to see if its still around!

Setting off from Brum soon, so thanks for that, weather permitting, it doesn't look good, we will get up there and have a look
