Kalloni Salt Pans and Surrounds
Visiting birder Jacco Slomp continues to provide an insight into overwintering Lesvos winter avain visitors .
Today saw an influx of common starlings, while the white headed duck moved to the salt pans (channel).

Kalloni Salt Pans
Along with a count of 34 Dalmatian pelicans, 2 white pelicans joined them.
Also present 25, Great white egrets and 20 Black headed gulls.

Dipi Larisos Reedbed
Eleni Galinou reports that a wryneck, originally ringed at Dipi in November 2021 ,
was netted again for ringing, only metres from the same spot.

Little bustard x 5
This is a rare bird for Greece and will be in my estimation a first for the island.
There have also been a handful of rare bird alerts for individuals on the Greek mainland.

Vagrant only a handful of sightings annually, though marginally increasing in frequency.

Dippy-Lársos Reedbed
6 Bearded tits were ringed by local conservationists at Dippy-Lársos Reedbed.
Bearded tits are scarce winter visitors to the island.

Slavonian grebe , Podiceps auritus, winter plumage
A single photographed out at sea, of Alykes by Stylianos Zannetos
This may be the third record for the island, ie one reported 12-17-16 and one photographed by Killian Mullarney 04-16-19.
Also in Kalloni Bay.

Weather wise , Lesvos at the end of December has seen a drop in temperatures and a dusting of snow on the hills.

Sorry can’t see a 2025 version of this thread. I’ll be on the island from 21st to 27th April and wondered if any of the thread participants would be around and fancied joining up for a days birding. Happy to buy lunch pay for expenses etc

Gulf of Kalloni
Yelkouan Shearwaters
Large rafts of Yelkouan's arrived feeding in the bay off Skala Kalloni
along with scores of Ruddy shelduck grazing at Alykes Wetland .
At Kalloni Salt Pans , Sunday last, a count of 30 Great white Egret and 9 spoonbill.
