Hi there,

I'm currently compiling the escapes section of the county bird report and have a report of a "Rosella Rainbow Parakeet". I'm trying to find the latin name of this species but can't even find the english name anywhere!

Any ideas?

There are various rosellas in Australia, Crimson Rosella etc. and also a Rainbow Lorikeet which is everywhere in eastern Australia. Is someone mixing up the names of more than one species or do hideous hybrids exist?

I've looked at a a couple of bird lists and can't find this anywhere. The nearest I can get is Rainbow Lorikeet (Trichoglossus haematodus).

I can't find an exact match to the description given either. However, on the basis of probability, and because of the high numbers kept in aviaries, my best guess would be the Eastern Rosella (Platycercus eximius) which is more widely referred to in the UK as the Golden-Mantled Rosella. This bird's plumage contains just about all the colours of the rainbow.

P. eximius taxonomy is a headache.......it also includes at times Northern and Pale-headed Rosellas in a newly named species White-cheeked Rosella.....

Rainbow Lorikeet Trichoglossus heamatodusis an incredibly varied (and also colourful species that will surely be split into several new taxa as outlined in a recent OBC Bulletin by Nigel Collar.

Marek,
In answer to your question, Platycercus eximius is the right bird to write down.

Tim,
I thought that White-cheeked Rosella was just another name for eximius. Will have to look at the subspecies. By now there are quite a few man-made mutations mucking the picture up.
