Kookaburra diet (1 Viewer)

Has anybody seen kookaburras eating fruit before, I was picking tomatoes today and found one that had been half eaten, (we have bower birds eating them) I threw the tomato into the yard and when I turned around there was a kookaburra eating trying to beat it to death on the ground, it then proceeded to eat it, so I threw another tomato near it and it grabbed that one and flew away with it???? I can't find anywhere that says kookaburras eat anything but meat.

Well they eat toast & vegemite! Back in '06 we were camping at Charlie Moreland Park and as we were eating breakfast the resident pair of Kooks moved in and watched. As I was about to pop the last piece of toast into my mouth one swooped down and took it from my fingers in a face-bashing flurry of wing feathers!! Bloody things.....but how can you not love 'em??

They're often described in the books as reptile specialists and they do indeed eat plenty of reptiles but they are really generalists and opportunists to boot, which is why they do so well in our towns and cities.
