Hi there

I wonder if anyone could identify this Kingbird. Taken in Pasadena in March 2022.

Many thanks!
Stewart

Assuming this is Pasadena, California, USA, I think it is a Western Kingbird. The other possibilities would be Tropical and Cassin's Kingbirds. The bill looks too small and the tail is not notched as in Tropical. The breast should be darker and the cheek more contrasting in Cassin's. Everything we can see best fits Western.

From the quality of the photos, I'm not sure we can positively ID this kingbird. Western is a very rare wintering bird in California but it is an early spring migrant and they start to trickle in in March so the likelihood of it being a Western improve through the month. However, to my eye I see a rather pronounced white chin area and do not see the white outer vane of the outer rectrix expected in Western. My best guess for this bird is Cassin's.

Thank you for the feedback, much appreciated!
