I am thinking of investing in a kestrel nest box. i have the ideal tree i can put it on atleast 20ft up. It overlooks countryside and a huge farm.

The thing is how can i guarantee it will be a Kestrel?

Will it drive all the House birds away.

When do they Nest!

Thanks

Hi Free, you wont be able to guarantee it will be a Kestrel nesting, you may get owls.
No they wont drive your other birds away. They nest April-May, 4-5 eggs, incubation 28 days, fledge 28-30 days. Good luck would be interested to hear how you get on.

I have spoken to the manufacturer and they can't assure me that it will be a Kestrel it could be doves, jackdoor or Goldeneye and owls. Now although i am not as fond as owls as kestrels it would make my wifes and daughters day . But if it was a Jackdaw?
Anyway. could be interesting and worth a try i think and if its one of the others then great as long as its something.
Now i have to put it up atleast 20ft.
I have a choice either side of the house or in a big oak tree but its quite close to a road and although not busy it is in the rush hour as its used as a 'Rat run'.
So far i have 3 nest boxes 3 bird feeders 2 bird baths and a bird table. But i cant resist putting one up so they can perhaps stake it out for 9 months.

Still not sure ...See Nestbox section. The varnish is all dry now and its ready.

Does it need to be that high? Cant it be more like 6 or 10ft?

6 or 10 feet won't work. 15 feet minimum I would say. A Kestrel Box with an open front and a ledge should not attract Jackdaws or Owls.
