Dear Members and Bird Watchers!

I remember putting a picture here of a white-tailed eagle nest and the gauntlet I had to run. So I will not put any pictures of what I think is a nest.

But maybe someone can help me with what is going on here.

I spot something looking like a bird nest with a big white bird in it. At least it looked like that and I was soon to see that it was a Javan Pond Heron and I was really surprised. I have never seen a lone egret or heron nest before.

They are always building in the same tree and there can be hundreds of them in the tree.

But it was strange, it was an adult bird in the tree with breeding plumage. There were two other adults next to the nest. I think it was a nest. The other two birds looked to be together with the bird in the nest.

I approached and the three of them took off and they returned to the nest when I had passed. The attached pictures is of the two other adult herons and it looks like it is starting to moult in to winter uniform.

Anyone here that have seen anything like this and know what the birds was up to?

Kind Regards and Happy Birding!

I don't think solo nesting is unusual for Javan Pond Heron. I don't know why there would be three adults near the nest, though. Maybe there is another nest in the area which wasn't easily visible?

Thank you cerw8385!

I wish I could post the picture. The nest was in a dead part of the tree. The tree next to it was a big palm tree. One adult standing in what looked like a nest and the two other bird was perching next to the bird in the nest. I was under the impression that they were together.

I think the breeding season for the egret/ herons as the fields are full of them. During the breeding season I hardly see them. And I do not know, most of the birds now are in breeding uniform, but I see a lot of them in winter uniform. And I guess that's the young birds from this year.

I know a few breeding areas and they are all the same, trees full of egrets and herons.

And they are nesting species by species. night herons breeding in a tree full of little Egret. And pond herons and Ibises.

Maybe this is a late nest and I will go back to have a look again in a week or so to see. And this is what is fun with being in the nature, I know nothing but I learn a little something almost every time I am out to look for birds.

I never go to prisons and I have not been to any zoo for at least 20 years, and before that when I was a kid.

My gym is close to the Safari World in Bangkok and during the breeding season the sky is black over the safari world. I decided to go have a look and I paid the entrance fee.

WOW, the safari world were full of storks, pelicans, egrets and herons nesting in the trees. Thousands of birds, the Painted storks were feeding their big babies on the ground and the openbills and pelicans had taken over the trees. Egrets and herons where nesting in the other trees

Thanks again, highly appreciated! The link was interesting and I will keep it as a reference

Kind Regards and Happy Birding

Hello cerw8385!

I was back at the site yesterday. The bird is still in the nest.

I kept my distance to avoid disturbing the bird and I could not see any babies.

So it is a single nesting paid as you thought.

I will try to go back an two weeks or so to see if there is any babies.

Kind Regards and Happy Birding
