Injured Red Breasted Nuthatch (1 Viewer)

I’m familiar with the guidelines of what to do when you find an injured bird. Usually, I would leave a fledgling where I found it or take an injured bird into wildcare, however, this situation is a little more unique. I’m visiting my 84 year old mother who has taken in an injured adult red breasted nuthatch. She has had it for several weeks. It is seemingly healthy despite not being able to fly. What should she/we do with it at this point? She keeps it in a cage with suet and water and brings in fresh cut branches for it to hop around on. I feel like it may be too late to take to a rehabilitation. We are in Oregon, USA. Thanks you!

Hi Mbuss and a warm welcome to you from all the Staff and Moderators. I can see your difficulty, but it's really important that you do get in touch with a local rehabber, they are experts at returning them to the wild. I'm not too sure on the laws where you are, but it could well be illegal in your state to keep a wild bird without getting it the treatment it needs from a professional rehabber. I think it's called something like the US Fish and Wildlife Service that have the information on their website.

I'm sure you will enjoy it here and I look forward to hearing your news. Please let us know how you get on.

Welcome to Birdforum. It would be best to get professional advice from a wildlife expert.
