a friend and i are planning a walk on sunday to see the eagle owls. i understand that we park in dunsop bridge and then a 2 1/2 mile walk to whitendale. is this an uphill walk?

on the way will it bepossible to see hen harriers, goshawks, ring ousels or wil i have to look elsewhere for them? these are 3 birds which i would put on my too see list for this walk. of course i do NOT want to know nesting locations but the best areas to see them. if some one can guide me then i'd be grateful!

take the path at the side of the post office, look out for spotted flycatcher behind PO, The track is tarmac and flat most of the way but there is a quite steep incline for the last 1/2 mile

As birdieboy says, plus a good chance of hen harrier and goshawk (latter especially as forested area on your left ends in hanging valley after about 1.8miles); ring ouzel could be around, if not check your OS map for other likely sites (there are some hints in place names within a ten mile radius) for before/after your owl visit.

Similar info and other people's experiences in the Lancs Eagle Owls thread.

It's a great place to see raptors! I saw Hen Harrier and Short-Eared Owl up by the Owls with a brief view of a smaller falcon...probably a Merlin.
Lower down in the wooded area I saw Buzzards, Kestrels and Sparrowhawk but wasn't lucky enough to see Goshawk although many have done. Also Dipper, Grey Wagtails and Spot Fly lower down.

It's a good hour walk though! Unless you plan to run it 8-P

I'm planning to go tomorrow. I'm going more for the potential raptorfest rather than the Eagle Owls although I'm sure the latter will be impressive. Weather forecast looks good too.

i think its one of the best areas to see birds and in great numbers too. there isa wide variety there and all enjoyable to watch. you have moorland, farmland, forest and a large wetland - stocks resevoir.

what more can be wanted?

saw the happy family - we missed mom catch a partridge or grouse though. on top of that saw some hen harriers, ravens, buzzards, short eared owls in the vicinity.
