Identifying Bird Songs (1 Viewer)

I am sure this has been asked before but my search has not revealed the answer.

I heard an unusual bird song this morning and wondered what it was. I don't think I can describe it other than it was very varied.
Is there anywhere on-line where you can listen to UK bird songs to try to identify them?
Failing that, what is the best software to get?

Hi Angie, at this time of year not many birds will be actually singing, the most likely candidate is Robin.Try the bird song link at the top of the page under resources.

Thanks for all the replies and links. Where a bird has a varied repertoire, the song sample needs to be longer.
I haven't identified the song I heard this morning. I just recognised it as being different. One part of it was almost a laugh. I will just have to listen tomorrow morning.

I have the CD-ROM guide to British Birds (version 7) from BirdGuides.

There are 2 CDs actually, and there is a wealth of information on them, as well as songs, calls etc. I believe it is available on DVD too - have a look at:

http://www.birdguides.com/

but we don't have a player - yet!!

Well I have id'd a song thrush this morning.
But after listening to so many bird songs not sure if that is the same bird I heard yesterday.

Elizabeth, does the CD-ROM Guide to British Birds have a facility to narrow down a search? Something like a water bird, single note, varied song, etc?

Afraid not - unless I've been missing something all these years!!!!! Perhaps someone else will come up with alternatives.

What sort of bird song? In November in the UK, birds rarely "sing."

I'd suggest you use a tape recorder and then you'll be able to describe it better, or search the internet for a comparable birds "song" Plenty available IMHO, Google or any other search engine should guide you to an appropriate site.
