Identify Bird Based On Call - Osaka/Kyoto, Japan (1 Viewer)

I have heard a distinctive bird call in two places so far in Japan:

- Minoh Park, north of Osaka
- Various shrines/temples in Kyoto including Ninnaji

I haven't managed to see the bird making the call but would love to know what it is.

The call is very distinctive - it sounds like a pig squealing. I assume the bird is relatively common as I have heard the call quite a few times now.

I imagine it's a Brown-eared Bulbul, which is one of the most common birds in Japan, possibly the most common. 'Hiyodori' in Japanese. It has a variety of calls, but this warning call is a very common sound in Japanese parks and woodlands.

And welcome to BirdForum!
