Humpback St Ives Cornwall (1 Viewer)

Chris Oates

Why does a Black-headed Gull have a brown head...
Two Humpbacks in the bay Jan 2,3,4 & 5th January.
No sightings for 3 days - 100's folk looking.

Sat 9th (1:30pm) Whale seen blowing on the East side of the bay near a Mackerel boat - later appeared off Smeatons pier at St Ives (1:50pm) and tracked towards the NCI Lookout at the Island.
No further sighting but this has happened before and the Whale has later retraced it's path in the opposite direction not far from shore.
I didn't hang around as the visibility by then was poor.

For the days it was missing Fishermen were not catching fish - today they were and some Gannets were working close to the Island.
Kittiwakes have been taking bait from the surface.

No idea which Whale this is - one from earlier or the one sighted off Porthcurno.

Whale still present - arrived 2 'ish (as usual) from the West, went East towards Hayle and returned Westwards.

Bottle-nose Dolphins very active now coming across the bay around mid-day and going west in search of food - they return between 4-5 o'clock to their patch east of Godrevy Lighthouse - we've had folk talking about tidal conditions + weather + all sorts of reasons as to why sea animals do what they do.

The Humpback Whale in January was entirely predictable while it was here.

Seems more like 'it's nice here and I fancy my lunch'

Humpback sighted by Coastguards early today "looked like it was just having fun" - good views of flukes.

Still more sightings by Fishermen seeing the Whale out by the Bahn Shoal Bouy - appeared to be stunning fish with tail fluke smashes.
