Hummingbird Resuscitation (1 Viewer)

A hummingbird flew into my window today. The bird was driven into the window by the local feeder guardian with an audible thwack. I looked out to see if the bird was ok. I was hoping (s)he had survived but unfortunately laying in the leaf litter below the feeder was the hummingbird casualty.
Closer inspection showed that the bird was stunned but still breathing. Oh (&)&$#@! What now? I raced inside and checked google for “injured stunned hummingbird”. I found this link (http://www.rubythroat.org/QuestionsInjured01.html) and followed the directions as best I could. Five minutes had passed and the bird was still laying on the ground. So I gently cupped my hands under the bird and lifted it up and set it on the feeder perch. The bird revived in my hands and did brief “spin ups” with it’s wings. Unfortunately it would not drink but it slowly flew off and landed on a nearby branch. The guardian hummingbird allowed the injured bird five minutes rest before chasing it away. I hope the bird survived the trauma.

Dave,

Great article and good knowledge to have for the future. Thanks for sharing it, and I hope your little guy will be okay!
