How waterproof is a Lowepro Mini Trekker? (1 Viewer)

I know this isn't really the right forum to post this thread, but here goes anyway.

How waterproof is a Lowepro Mini Trekker camera bag. I'm off to Costa Rica next week and it's the "Green" rainy season. The likelihood is that I will get caught in a tropical downpour at some time. Will my gear be OK?

Thanks

Martyn

Martyn,. I have a Mini Trekker "AW". Not sure if this is the same bag or not, but it has a velcro'd enclosure on the bottom which contains a silver waterproof cover. It just pulls out and covers the bag and tightens with a draw-string. I have used this to sit on on occasion, literally pulling the cover out and spreading it open - this has kept my backside completely dry on wet grass for a good hour.

Get some of those little sachets of silicon and put them in with your kit to soak up any condensation.

Thanks Paul,

my bag is the Mini Trekker Classic which unfortunately doesn't have the pull out cover. I guess "AW" stands for all weather? Thanks for tip tip re silicon sachets, I'll pop over to the retail park this weekend!

My intention is to buy as big an umbrella (golfing type?) as I can get as soon as I get to Costa Rica rather than pack a small one. This should keep of the worst of the rain hopefully.

Cheers

If you pop into Blacks or any other outdoor shop you should be able to purchase a small waterprook rucksack cover - less than £10. I'm sure you can pay very much more in some outlets - I have no evidence that they are more effective.

I've had the Mini Trekker for several years, and I wouldn't trust it at all in torrentially wet weather. The zip for the main bag has what is best called a vestigial cover, whilst some of the smaller compartments do have better coverage from heavy rain. (I wonder if the designers knew that the AW version would be available soon after they designed the classic.)

My latest bag (for lesser outings) is a Revo 180 AW is much better protected, even without the AW cover in place.

From Malcolms post it's clear as I suspected that I need to do something, and Bill has the solution. I'll go into town tommorrow. We have a Millets that have a small rucksack cover on their website for £5.99.

Many thanks for your help

Martyn

Thanks to Bhoggy. This must sound stupid but I never realised that my Mini Trekker AW had a cover in the bottom. It's well camaflaged. Well I have only had it fot 3 years. I must be thick.

It will prevent your equipment getting soaked, but it will soak up water, and with time that will create humidity, and even damp with time, inside the bag. That will be curtains for your gear due to mould, rust etc.

So ... yes it will survive a downpour, but you don't want your gear in it for long and you will need to dry it thoroughly.

Just use a cover as suggested above.

This is a great thread, because I have the Samsonite DFV 90 Camera Bag on the label
that came with it, nothing about water proof cover, yet low and behold at the bottom
of the bag is a Velcro panel that has the water proof cover attached....

Thanks for the thread Martyn

Now if it rains I will be happy (what am I saying if it RAINS) hurry up sunshine I have places to go :storm: :flyaway:

use the low cost option as I do and keep a green bin liner in the bag which can be used in case of emergency, also if the ground is very poor you can use it as a ground sheet, when you need to pack it up just turn it inside out.
